Default NV3500 Information needed

Ok so as I have posted before I am swapping the 46RE out of my 99 dakota R/T in favor of the NV3500 Manual transmission. My question is what years/models/engines transmissions will work? Will an NV3500 from a 3.9 or a 4.7 work? Does it have to be out of a 5.2L Dakota? I KNOW the AX-15 is too weak but that is usually behind the 2.5L and maybe 3.9?? What years are compatible? Will a NV3500 from a 2003 work or does it have to be 1997-2000? I am just trying to get some concrete information for when I hit the yards again next week. Up until this point I have been looking exclusively for 1997-2000 5.2L 2WD NV3500 which are extremely rare this part of the country.

Thanks!

I do believe that anything behind a magnum engine (6 or 8 cylinder) will work. The shifter MIGHT be in a different position on the full-sized trucks though, that I am not sure about. Might just be a different shifter. NV3500 that bolts to a 4.7 has a different bolt pattern, and I would not recommend that.

Awesome, that helps tremendously....ill open my search criteria to any 3.9, 5.2L, or 5.9l magnum engine.

Almost positive ive seen a few 3.9L manuals in the local yards. For some reason I assumed a 3.9L NV3500 was a weaker version than the V8 counterparts

The NV3500 definitely has to come out of a Dakota, not a Ram 1500 as I read different shifter positions....I saw I think 4 different types of NV3500s listed, A, B, C, D,...on one rebuild site, I'd like to know the differences too as I am also looking for an NV3500 5 speed manual for my 1998 5.2 V8 Dakota that came with 5 speed, my orig. trans is making lots of whining sounds and grating sounds, particularly on deceleration. Looking for a good trans or rebuilt one in the Denver area. Anybody who is a guru on these sub models of the 3500 please chime in

Wanted to start by telling you what I have.
87 Dakota 4wd with a 2002? Nv3500 4.7 tied to a 2000 5.9 magnum.
Quite the mixture, but it all bolts together.

The bolt patterns all interchange.
My understanding is, all Dakota V8's with a 5 speed are NV3500's
All 5 SPD Dakota V6 from 2000 forward are NV3500's

I think there are some difference with speedometer hook ups.

so if im reading right you have a 2000 5.9L magnum in your 1987 dakota with a NV3500 trans from a 2002 model year that was originally hooked to a 4.7L?

So basically any 2wd V8 from 1997-2004 should work? If so, im ticked cause ive missed out on quite a few transmissions over the last 6 months doh.

Correct on mine, but its 4wd and the speedo runs off the transfer case.

I think throughout the run of NV3500 in Dakota's (94-04) some had provisions for speedometer, others didn't.

You don't have a link to those on Chrysler factory parts do you? I had trouble finding the actual trans, so a lot of peripheral parts...
