Default Tranny

Will a 2002 3.9 42re transmission compatible with a 97 3.9 42re?
. I don't believe the 97 has overdrive.
at a junkyard about to pull the tranny out of the 2002.
But don't want any surprises. Don't want to find out that the plugs are different.

The electronics are most definitely different. I would try to find one closer in year.

I already pulled the tranny. Junk yard had a 50% off sale. no return or exchange on them. In a mad rush to get it out before they closed for the day. I didn't notice the plug on it till after I was out the door. As a friend discount the plugs. I may go back on Monday when they have a 75% off sale. So if I can find the right one. I can sell the one I pulled for double what I payed for it. Pan and magnet was very clean. As clean as the 46 rh that I pulled the day before. For a 95 ram van. Got that one in already and running / shifting great.
. But if it is the wrong tranny. Then I will have to go with plan B.
That would be to pull the 5.9 out of my 97 4 x 4 Dakota extra cab and Drop it into the 97 2x4 single cab along with the good 46re tranny that I have already.

Default Got the threaded converter for the neutral safety switch.

I can't get the old one out so I can put the new one in so I can use the 3 wire plug.
Does anyone know if there is a conversation for the speed cable? The wire harness has 3 plugs on it. There only one hole for the speed sensor. So what needs to be done to the other two plugs? Because the truck won't crank. So I'm thinking maybe one of the plugs might have to be wired together. Or put a paper clip from one hole to thr other. Hoping some will knows the fix to be able to start the truck.

Bit more information on what you are doing would be good. This thread is rather old......
