Default Limited Slip

So my 04 Dakota Quad Cab doesnt have a limited slip. Took it on the beach last week and it was sh---y[:@]. Bogged, spun tires, got stuck twice[&o]. Needless to say, im going to get a local shop to install an aftermarket limited slip. I called the local dealers and was quoted anywhere from 2100 to 2700 installed[]. Gonna check a few local shops tommorrow and see if i can find better. I will be using this truck on the beach, and in the mtns comne winter time for snowboarding excursions as well. The open diff it has just aint cuttin it[:'(]. I didnt have the option of getting one added being I bought this truck used with 27k miles on it. Im hopeing to find somebody who can install an aftermarket Ltd Slip for under 800 round here. Anybody got any reccomendations on this before I get it done? My concern is come wintertime when Im driving through snow for over 200 miles, and having troubles with traction. West VA can get very nasty in the mtns come wintertime, with snows over 20 inches, and whiteouts, not to mention no cellphone service at all. By the way, i got a steal on this truck practically as far as price goes 12k$ so adding another 1k$ to a truck worth 18k wouldnt be a loss, especially considering what im using it for.

2100-2800?

AHAHAHahahaha

sorry.

Ok.

You're pretty close in your guess of what it should cost, ~$400 for a LSD unit, plus another $250-300 labor, plus a master rebuild kit (27k miles, you could do without but why not since it's already open) new seals, bearings, etc.

OR, you could go to a junkyard and find a low-mile dakota/durango with the LSD and just swap entire axles. It would certainly be cheaper than $2100.

the rear end blew in my dakota about a month ago and it was $1000 to get it fixed. thats a new carrier, spiders, bearings, and what ever else goes in there. basically i have a whole new rear end. and plus i got a tranny flush done at the sme time. so just swapping out the rear diff for a posi shouldn't cost you more that $1000 if you look around.

Get the selectable locker for the rear and a helical limited slip for the front. All the 4x4 magazines recommend this for IFS trucks.

you can find reasonably priced mopar unit limited slips if thats what you want. the most durable is of course a detroit locker. this will also cost you the most money but you will never regret it.

the corperate 9 would be the chrysler 9 1/4" rear end. usually the factory doesnt state "locker" just limited slip, but it could be for a locker i've just never seen that. easiest way to tell just to a burn out and check for 2 tracks. thats the fun way!

Dodge doesn't offer a locker on anything but the Power Ram, iirc.
