What engine do you have and what mileage? Surging can sometimes be associated with vacuum leaks. Check all your vacuum hoses and while you're at it check the PVC valve for clogging. Check tightness of the intake manifold and throttle body bolts. Listen for hissing sounds. Other problems could be fuel pressure, clogged air filter, or (hopefully not) leaking head gasket. Does check engine light ever come on? Good luck and please post it if you find the problem.

the first thing you should change is the Throttle position sensor. its located on the drivers side of the throttlebody, and takes about 5 minutes to change. these tend to go bad and will cause the motor to rev. if this doesnt help it is the torque converter in the trans starting to go out.

I've never had surging at idle and at highway speed. I had a Ford 150 that did something like that and it turned out to be torque converter overdrive lockup problems. I assume your transmission fluid is at correct level. Does the tranny fluid look or smell cooked? Should be a nice pink-red color. Have you ever had the transmission fluid/filter changed?
I stick to the every 30,000 miles schedule and so far I've had none of the problems that some Dak drivers are having. I'm just guessing now. Good luck.

MrBLOND, did you ever get your reving problem figured out. I have the same problem with my 99 Dakota. At 60 mphs it will rev up from 1600 to 1800 rpms. Sometime you can feel the tranny kick down and come right back. It only takes a second to happen. The real weird thing is it does it more in the morning on the way to work than going home in the afternoon. Any ideas would, help out my machanic is drawing a blank on this one. I will tell him the already mentioned ideas. Thanks for any help. Todd H

that problem relates to a noisey throttle position sensor. there is one other problem of a wire inside the tranny that has shorted out causing a similar problem... you can search for it over in the 2nd gen ram forum, it was there this week.
most of the time a new TPS will fix it.

Yes, it's the trans. Let me see if I can help diagnose it. Your cruising on the highway, probably with the cruise control on. Constant speed, and the engine will rev about 200 to 300 rpm and drop back to normal. Only does it under these circumstances? It is internal in the trans. mine does the same thing. I have 79K on mine, and it has been doing it for sometime, I have gotten several recommendations on this one. Could be TC, could be something else, but it is tranny related. I just haven't worried about it yet.
