Just wondering what makes them go bad? This might be apples to oranges, but my wifes 01 Explorer had this sensor go bad and it had a ton of gunk on it. When I wiped it off most of it is metal, wear from the gears and parts of the dif. Could all this metal throw it off or is that what makes it go bad. And yes I know this axle isn't long for life, it had a bad axle seal got low on oil, I added over a quart. The ABS light issue is how I found the problem.

yeah it's the rear diff sensor. you cant clean it as it's a hall effect sensor meaning it's magnetic in nature

when they go bad, you cant revive them with a cleaning.

i have heard of gunk building up on them and a cleaning working. i would just replace it for the effort. mine broke when i removed it anyway, so without a spare i would have been sunk. it goes into the pumpkin, so spraying, at any rate, would not clean the vital part.
