Default V6 to a V8?

Anyone done this? How much would it cost around? I'm running a 98 and really wanting to put one in it and just need to know what types of changes will need to be made. Or is it even worth the trouble?

Not worth it.
You'd need the V-8 computer and wiring harness, and I would only trust the V6 automatic to a stock V8. So if you wanted to add anything to the V8, a differant transmission.
And I don't think the V8 would be a direct bolt up, so you'd have to tinker a little bit with mounts.
It can be done, but it depends on how much time and money you are willing to dump into it. (Wish I was alive when dropping in a differant motor didn't involve so much crap)

its not too bad to do because the 5.2 V8 is the exact same motor as the 3.9 just with 2 more pistons you do need all new computers and wireing harnesses though. shouldnt really cost that much but your best bet would be to find a wrecked dakota in a junk yard that has a v8 that way you get all the wireing and computers with the motor

i believe 14,000 was an extreme exageration unless your trying to put some crazy really expensive racing motor in there you should be able to get a motor out of a junkyard for about 800 then you'll have cost of labor puting the engine in your looking at several hundred there

$14,000, easily?!? Maybe if you take it to some shop, but that would take the fun out of it.

(Following prices are for new items)
PCM is about $350-$500.
Wiring harness probably around $500-$600 (not cheap)
Automatic transmission - $2,000-ish
5.2L V8 - $2,300 (Includes: Cylinder Block With Pistons & Rings, Crankshaft, Connecting Rods & Bearings.)
= around $5,150-$5,400

Of course, not everything has to be new. As dodgedakota98luver said, you can find a junked Dakota and get the engine, PCM, and wiring harness from it. You may want to rebuild the motor if its iffy. Definitly a good idea to rebuild any used transmission.
I'm not sure, but you might have a transmission control module that would have to be replaced.
Of course, there will be little costs for other things (new motor mounts, etc. etc.) and lots of time.
