What does this engine code mean?
What's up fellas, I got a new one for me. My truck,(2002 dakota w/4.7L) has been throwing the cel light on once the truck starts to get warm or runs at a constant rpm. The code it's giving me is: P0442 (M) Evap Leak Monitor Meduim Leak Detected A small leak has been detected in the evaportive sysem. Now, when I reset the code after it turns the light on and the truck has run for a few minutes, it won't turn it back on for a day or two. I understand the code but what the hell does the evap system consist of exactly, the truck doesn't even have an EGR valve, so what should I check? Any help would be great so thanks in advance.
ok one of 2 things check and make sure your gas cap is seating properly. check the rubber for cracks or dirt. if that doesnt fix the problem crawl underneath your truck and there is a canister directly in front of the gas tank. check and see if one of the hoses are off/ leaking. its definetly a vacuum problem though
I'll give that gas cap thing a shot first and I may as well check that charcoal canister, too. Man, I feel like such a lame *** with you guys telling me to check my gas cap, lol, I look like a damn rookie! Thanks guys.
a word of advice on this code, locate and relpace ALL of the evap vacuum hoses under the hood. the hose they used from the factory is standard vacuum hose and does not hold up well to fuel vapors.they have a life span of about 4 years and the first sign of failure is cracks at the ends where they press onto the plastic fittings.
to replace, buy about 7 feet of 5/16 fuel hose (check the size of the hose isntalled in the truck before you buy any)
locate the green service cappositioned in one of the hoses to identify the hoses you are looking for.
There are 2 long hoses, one from the throttle body going forward to avalve at the front drivers side of the engine compt. then one leading from thisvalve back to the service port. then there is a short 2 inch piece connecting the service valve to the hard plastic line that runs under the truck to the evap cannister.
your first reaction when you find one of these hoses split will be to cut off the last inch or so and reuse. it will split again within a week or two... ask me how I know[:@]

my moms 2002 durango 4.7L v8 throws that same code every year between september and december when it starts to get cold we just erase it and it usually stays off, or once its been on for a while, this year it just turned itself off, i mean we have the reader for the OBD II plug under the dash but that is something to try if you dont want to do all of that work??? just a thought
