Gas fill overflow on my 06 durango
the NHTSA hasn't done anything to help anyone on here. I filed my complaint about 2 years ago. The reason Dodge finally did replace mine was because I kept complaining and then the rust started. The 06 has 5 year 100,000 mile rust through, if you see bubbling, you can probably get it fixed. I could deal with burping the tank, but not the rust. I didn't have the correct gas tank on mine from the factory which has them puzzled, I only had an 18 gallon tank, now I can fill to about 23 gallons.
Keep complaining, I kept talking to them about the environmental issue with gas overflow and personal safety AND that they recalled the 05's for this!
Happy New Year to everyone!

I bought an 06 Durango the beginning of December, and we had the same fuel over-spill problems. Took it back to the dealer (not Chrysler), they tried to tell me I was over-pumping. BS, made their service guy look at it, they replaced the tank. Now, as others have experienced, I can't fill the tank in a single run- it constantly shuts off after a gallon or two.
I have filed complaints at the various links shared by others on here, and I am in contact with the service manager at the dealership I bought the truck from (skipping the obnoxious salesmen entirely this time).
So far, I am fortunate in that the service manager is in agreement with me that this is a major issue and he is acting as the intermediary for me with the Chrysler dealership that is doing the repairs.
The more of us who complain, the more chance of getting it resolved, right?
Thanks to all the contributors to this thread, helps those of us new to the issue know that we're not the only ones out there!!

Same thing happened to me. After the gas tank was replaced, stopping the overfill, the pump kept shutting off. The dealer replaced the tank, and other parts in the fuel/gas tank line. After 2 tanks, and several other parts were replaced, it now works properly.
Make sure you get your hands on the Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that details the gas tank overspill/shut-off issue, and details the remedy. There is a hierarchy/checklist in the TSB that tells the mechanic what to replace in a step/sequence. Note that there are additional parts in the system, other than the tank, that run from the engine to the gas tank. They are part of the system, and part of the potential problem, and fix.
Finally, note that the TSB applies to most, if not all Chrysler products over various model years.
My 06 Durango required 2 new tanks, and several other fuel emission/line parts, before it was fixed.

LOL! Been there done that! However, those of us who are "confirmed" Hemi/Durango loyalists would never replace same, with something, forgive me, as pedestrian as a Suburban!
The fix is out there, you just have to get beyond the BS! Good luck!

I've replaced gas tanks, engines, rear axles, etc. on cars for 30 years and was wondering what parts are needed to fix my gas spill back problem on my 2007 5.7 Durango.
I sure am not paying the dealer $1000 to try a bunch of things if I can replace the tank and a couple of parts for $400 and be done with it.

Although this TSB references a refueling problem it doesn't state overflow of fuel as part of the problem. Unfortunately, I think this is as close as Chrysler is going to come to admitting there is an overflow problem until numerous severe injuries/deaths occur, they are sued, and national media exposure is given to this issue.
Well...add me too the list. I just purchased a used 2006 Durango with 45,000 miles and am having the same refueling issues. I will be birddogging this issue until fixed.
Love these Durangos, we now have two, an '04 (purchased new, now has 170,000 miles) and this '06. The '04 is the same body style as the "06 and I believe is the 1st year of the second generation Durango. The '04 has overflowed a few times over the years but not to the extent of the '06. Was wondering what the difference is parts or design wise between the '04 and later years that would cause the problem? Had a 2001 first generation Durango (purchased new) that never experienced this problem.
Some research I've done uncovered some informative reading on the subject:

The dealer replaced my inlet tube and tank and so far all is well. I did notice last week that it may have purged a few days after filling as it appeared to clean the salt from my Durango by leaving a trail from the gas door down to the wheel well. Hum, that is the also the part where my paint is bubbling from rust......
