Default Need help with buying a Durango

I might be looking to buy a 2nd gen Durango. Was wondering what I should look out for, what are common problems, etc... I will probably be looking at something with under 30k miles on it, so it shouldn't have too many problems hopefully.

Are any years better then others?
Just about everyone i'm seeing has the 4.7 in it. How is that do in a big Durango?

Thanks.

Silver, I would go with the 5.7L as it will have the MDS (mutiple displacement system) in it if it is above the 2004 models. The 2007 and up models had a face lft as the hood is not scalloped over the wheel wells and I think it looks more aggresive with the wider hood and lowered grille. The 2009 model has a variable cam and timing that pushes the 5.7L horsepower from 335 up to 375 (give or take). You can PM me about the 2007 model as I had it for three years now without a problem except a worn / broken tie rod end,
FF

When looking last night, I saw over 20 Durango's for sale in my area in my mileage/price range, and all were 4.7's. If that's all I can get, how does the 4.7 do? Should I avoid it?

If you are not going to tow much then the 4.7 is ok. MPG are about the same with the 5.7 and 4.7. I much prefer the 2004 5.7 without MDS. I am not a MDS fan at all.

For the better or worse?

Does no one have any other advice about these?

Our short list is:
-Dodge Durango
-Nissan Pathfinder
-Dodge Journey
-Toyota Highlander
-Ford Explorer
-Jeep Commander
-Honda Pilot

We can get any of these (all have 3 rows) for around $18-24k, and with under 30k miles. Just need to go drive some and see what we like best. My top pick right now is the Durango, Commander, or Pathfinder since the rest are more carlike.

Pathfinder: under-engineered.

Commander: even Jeep admits it was a mistake.

Guess that leaves the Durango.

Ya, the Commander seems to have lots of isuues.
How is the Pathfinder under-engineered? Consumer Reports and many others rank it well above the Durango for reliability, MPG's, etc...

Ever own a Nissan?

If so, you know. Under-engineered.
