OK, but every diff I have worked on the fill plug was easily located. I looked on the main housing everywhere and didnt see one.

Nope, only thing on the cover is the suspension bar that bolts through it. I suspected this maybe could be used as a fill plug when the bolt is removed.

01ss:

The 8.25 rear end in my 04 has a rubber plug installed into the cover that the watts linkage attaches to.

BTW, my factory service manual says the 8.25 axle requires 70 ounces of gear oil.

I have yet to see an axle assembly without either a rubber fill plug, or a metal threaded plug somewhere on the side of the pumpkin so levels can be checked.

Either Mobil 1 or Royal Purple work very well.

actually, a diff can be filled without having a plug...They make special bags that you fill with oil and put inside the diff housing, and when you drive the gears puncture the bag and it disintegrates into the oil, and it's the proper level.

01:

Make that 72 ounces for your 9.25 axle.

Dodge4lyfe:

Gotta say that I have never heard of that type of fill system for an axle. Sounds like something the engineers cooked up to please the bean counters.

Similar to the transmissions made that have no dipstick. Aka, Chev Mailbu, Pontiac Grand Am, and Olds Alero.

IMO, a vehicle component that costs 2 grand or more and relies on lubrication should have a freakin dipstick.

Add mid/late 90s cavaliers to that list of no dipsticks.

ive heard of doing this if your on the trail and need to drain your fluid and need to put it back in with a zip lock bag--- but as soon as you get home or out of the trail you drain and pick all the pieces of plastic out..

i've googled the **** out of this and cannot find any special bag.
If you have a link or vehicle diff that uses this method please pass it on.

btw according to the service manual for both the 8.25 and 9.25 diffs there is a push in type plug
