Talking 2005 Durango clicking/rattling noise

As of late I have noticed when I start my Durango up cold it sounds rough. Almost like it has a big performance engine. I have a V8 4.7L.

I can hear the sound coming from under the engine, almost like there a hole in one of the hoses or something. As the car warms up the sound starts to go away, or at least is not as detectable.

When I first start to drive it, I hear a clicking/rattling sound. This sound is very loud when going from 0-30 mph. When it is warms or have been running a while I don't hear this Clicking/rattle.

Could it be a spark plug gone bad? In the past on rare occassions I have noticed the rpms spike while it is warming up. I am not talking a little, but a big rev then it comes down. Also on occassions while backing up or turning my engine shuts down. I start it back up with no problem.

Also there has been no leaking fluids or engine lights come on. I really need some mechanical advice.

The 4.7L has problems with the studs breaking so I would check into that and maybe the throttle position sensor if the RPMs surge alot,

+1 on the TPS (throttle position sensor). My wife's Durango had problems with occasional surging at idle, but mostly major hesitation off the line or even during normal driving. According to this and other forums, the TPS units in the HEMI and 4.7s are pretty weak after a while. Replaced it and wow, what a difference.

OP, You likely have a broken manifold bolt.

I think you guys are right and it might be the exhaust. Dropped it off at a Ford Dealership. I know Ford right, but most of the Dodge dealers in my area have closed down. The nearest one won't return my calls or emails. I hope it doesn't cost to much, anyone in CA have one done, and if so how much did it run.

My wife's 05 has almost 54,000 miles on it and this happened to hers a few months ago we have a 100,000 miles warranty so Dodge fixed it for free. They had to take off both manifolds and drill out three broken studs and replace studs and gaskets+ labor, I asked the service man how much this would of cost if I had to pay and he said around 1000.00 for both side to be done. ...That's at a Dodge dealership here in Pa

Piston? lol

It's a broken manifold bolt as stated above. Once the engine heats up, the noise goes away as the hole closes (expands). Most bolts can be threaded back out and replaced.
