Default 2005 Durango limited Tire Questions

GOODYEAR WRANGLER SR-A P265/65R 17

Are these tires any good they are the originals with 33k miles and I think I need new ones before the winter.

Someone replied back to me on a want add on craigslist and said he has been in the tire business for 35+ yrs and the SR-A tires are the worst from Goodyear. I don't know because I just bought the D-L and am riding on the tires with 33k and not new from the factory/original when new.

any inputs thanks

Whenever I am in the market for new tires I check out tirerack.com . They have all kinds of tire info including some test reports, consumer feedback and tire ratings. Here in Florida we get lots of rain, so I want a tire with good wet weather characteristics. You may want some other qualities. Do some research on their website as it is a good place to start.

I wouldn't spend any money until you see how they perform in the snow.

I put some Yokohama Parada Spec-X tires on the D 12k miles ago, with a trip to Michigan and entire Colorado winter. I'm very happy with these tires and will buy them again.

While some say they are bad I ran them in the winter on my 04 and 08 and thought they where fine. When it came time for new I went with the Parada Spec X like Pokermonkee. Tirack reviews as well as Dodge forums all will say they are no good though.

speaking from personal experience the goodyears i considered to be absolute junk, horrible traction if anything other than dry conditions. I traded them on Firestone Destination A/T's excellent traction anywhere, anytime, and great ride. I took them through 2 ft snow drifts and kept going without feeling like i was loosing traction. Definately the best bang for your buck!

DSS:

+2 on Tire Rack being a good research tool as well as tire supplier in many instances.

At 33K, I would think you would have plenty of tread left on those RSA's.
My D came with the 265 sized RSA, but at 54K tread depths were uneven due to one having been replaced while the other three were pretty much worn out.

I lucked into a set of 4 of the 245 sized RSA's for a steal, and am now running them.

While I probably would not buy the RSA'a new, I don't think they are a bad tire. More like middle of the road.

These should be ready for the scrap pile in the next 5-10K. I came upon a good deal on 5 new Firestone Transforce AT's last night on Ebay, so those will go on when these are done.

We have had no problems with our Goodyears. These are the second set on the truck now. We got about 58k on them and they passed state inspection but they do not pass my inspection and will be replaced. With 115k on the truck I am not looking to spend a bundle on a 60k tire but I would read up on tirerack and look around and see what tires your neighbors run. A walk through a parking lot with your head down can teach you a lot.

Personally I dislike Goodyear tires, they rate very low on Tire Rack.com. It really denpends on how and where you drive. I has 3 out of 4 of the Goodyears on My Durango BREAK the belts inside after 38000 miles. I have the Firestone Wilderness on it now and I love them.

IMO, Goodyear does make some decent tires, but not many.

* The SRA's that are OEM on the Gen 2 are ok. They are up to $150 each new though which is too pricey.

* The Wrangler RTS tires that came OEM on the Gen 1 Durango are great in the dry and snow, but so hard that they are scary in the wet. They last a zillion miles due to the hardness.

Firestone, Michelin, Dayton, Cooper, to name a few make good tires also.

Spend some time on Ebay and Craigslist and see what you can find.
