Your Durangos fuel filter is inside the gas tank on the bottom of the pump. I hope that if you went in that far, you also replaced the fuel pump itself.
You need to get a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail and see what pressure if any it has.
Might be the fuel pump relay or the pump itself.
Since it runs when you spray some in, sounds like the fuel system is the place to be trouble shooting.

That's the smart way to do it.
Ok, have you tried the key dance to see of you have any trouble codes stored in the system?
While watching the odometer display, start with the ignition key in the off position, then turn forward to run (not start). then, back to off, then back to run, then back to off, then run.
You should see either Pxxxx code(s) in the window, and then pdone when the list is through.
If all you see is pdone, then no codes are stored.
You could have a sensor on the fritz not allowing it to start, but I am still voting for something in the fuel system not doing its job.

I don't know about the Gen2, however the Gen1 "filter" is just a screen perm-attached to the pump. Change one, change both by default. Rumor of "change the filter" in Gen1 circles are internet rumor from those that have never seen the pump. You would have to break the pump by removing the screen. It is melted in place.

You have already replaced the fuel pump and it still wont start? if so I would look at the ASD relay and make sure you are even getting power down to the fuel pump in the first place. since you are getting it to run on external fuel I would look at the fuel pump control circuit begining with the ASD.
