Default Shocks

Just put on new tires on my 04. The rears where cupping and the tire guy thinks she needs rear shocks.

I think he is right.

I two a 24 foot RV 2-3 times a year?

What are the best shocks and where to get them?

How hard to do?

Do I need to do all 4 at one time? Or can I do rear now and front later?

If I do the rear should I get her aligned? What about the front?

Earl

Earl:
Bilsteins are your best bet. Search the net for a good deal. Try Shox.com and the like. You should be able to get a set of 4 shipped to your door for somewhere around $250-$280.

Although you can replace them in pairs, the best bet is all 4 at once.

You won't be sorry. Don

Do rear and front need to match or can you save $ on the front?

Front and Rear. +3 Bils. = The best solution.

I just bought Monroe sensa-trac self adjusting shocks for my Dakota; haven't put them in yet but from all the reviews I read they're top of the line shocks. Ideally, you should do all 4 at the same time to keep everything balanced, if not, then at the very least do them in pairs. You shouldn't need to have the alignment done, however if you haven't had one in a while then it would be good to have one after replacing all the shocks

just bought a durango a couple of months ago. first thing i did was put on shocks, simple enough job. i was surprised that the bolts were so rusted, start spraying wd40 or something on the bolts a few days before you start the job.

i couldn't get bilsteins quick enough so got a set of monroe reflex, they are good, changed the whole attitude of the truck. am used to harder shocks but they do the job well, the ride is not harsh but not soft. truck doesn't lean any more and no longer bounces around washboard gravel roads. in retrospect i should have put on something a little harder for the dirt roads but for mostly highway and street driving they do the job very well.

set me back about 70 bucks and change times 4. if i were you i'd do the whole truck at once, chances are the front ones need changing as well. i think book time is about 1.5 hours to do all 4, it took me a little over 2 hours from taking the tools out to putting them away.

WD40 may work, but penetrants like Knock'R'Loose or similar are better for killing rust. WD40 is a lubricant (it says so right on the can), a penetrant is better for killing rust on bolts/nuts.

70 bucks per? Did you buy them at an auto parts store? If you paid that much online for them, you got robbed.

My wife never tows with hers (if you do tow at all, Bilsteins are the recommended unit), so I cheaped out and got Reflexes as well, but I bought them at Rock Auto. About $160 shipped, I got all four.

yep i bought them retail i know i paid too much but as i couldn't wait i had to pay premium for them.

let us know what you think about the shocks, just like you when i was looking at what to put on the truck, i searched for reviews and i couldnt really find much that was specific for the truck.

good luck installing them.
