You can get an aftermarket like you see so often in others cars. You can get a instrument cluster, but it has to be from the very same year due too compatability issues. I went through the same thing when I had my 01 Neon. The mileage storage and signal strength were different form the 2000 cluster I bought, Never could get it to work. The least expnsive and trouble free way to go is aftermarket tachs. Good luck.

It all depends on what tach you get. Some need tach adapters, some just need to be connected to the right wire. If it shows like half RPM, then you need to connect it to the wire off of the PCM.

Aftermarket tachs use a 12VDC signal, where the stock signal is less voltage and a different signal form as well. Perhaps someone with a better knowledge of electronic wave signals can explain it.

Yeah I'm looking for a tach for my 2000 SE Neon too, I called some people from the ads on my Sport Compact Car magazine. (801)796-1460--their tachs are like $220 but you can choose your colors; they also have a shiftlight, and they have teseted them on a 2001 neon.
(866)529-4367--I don't know about their higher quality tachs but they have a cheap one that is said to work on 2nd gen neons and its $28.99 with $8.99 shipping.

I'll prolly go with the second one since mine is auto also and I don't really want anything special...

Which PCM wire would you connect the tach signal wire to? I have a 2000 Neon Highline, the tach I want to install is a Sunpro Super Tach II, which I heard is possible despite what the paper included states. Supposedly the green wire is for tach signal... It also says about connecting the backlight to the dimmer switch, where would be the best location to wire this to as well??

To wire a tach into a DIS vehicle, you need to buy a tach adapter. They are around $60. As for the dimmer switch wire, there's only one place to tap into. The wire itself.

thanks, however, i heard that you can bypass not only using an adapter but wiring it to the ignition coils(pretty sure they said ignition coils, whatever it is that distributorless cars have) by wiring it to something in or coming from the PCM

"just had a sunpro super tach II installed, 2.5", and it was running slow at 1st. i could mash the peddal down & let her wind up 2 7000rpm+tach wood
max out at 3000rpm/atx. my mechanic ran 1 of the wires directly 2 my pcm
instead of the coil pack the tach is very responsive and completely accurate
if u want 2 know about this pcm 'coil bypass' hook up i can post which pcm wire u gotta hook up 2 on monday nite after i ask my tech. i guess it is also easier 2 do it this way so he sez"

but he never posted again....
