FlexFuel gas is E85. 10% is close, but it is by no means E85. Cheap 87 octane out here is $4.10/gallon. I don't need to add another $0.10/gallon. As for all of those negatives of ethanol in gasoline, I'd like to see many, specific cases of what you describe. My truck has over 200,000 miles on it (the highest mileage vehicle I currently own) and has no corrosion in the fuel system. As for reduced engine life...that's going to be hard to prove that with all the cars out here that make it several hundred thousand miles. Ethanol gasoline isn't the only fuel that can have water in it.

The real solution to the problem isn't an additive, but to stop these crazy policies.

Has anyone figured out the bad gas mileage yet? I am having the same issue, except my 1st gen Neon is a manual.

Have you done all of the basic preventative maintenance?

I don't see how all of you are getting such horrible mileage. I get 30-32 city and 35-38 highway with a 3 speed. All I've done is high flow air filter and chopped off my muffler. I drive it like hell and it has 165k on it. I also change my plugs/wires every 6 months. Only thing I can think of besides regular PM and no codes would be a partially clogged cat or you need new gas caps.

JQuiding, please stop posting the same question. One time is enough. You also have two threads going in the 1st Gen section for the same thing.

shot in the dark, for those of you having the bad milage, how much do YOU weigh?
i ask because there is a significant derivation on my neon, from when my brother owned it, to me.
He's the type that keeps 'the little book" for each car, listing all maintenance, and details, Including MPG for every gas purchase, I've Kept this book up.
Aside from the differences in our commutes,
his commute was 40 mi each way mostly interstate(top speed limit 70mph),
mine is 5 mi each way, all "surface streets" w/ a top speed limit of 50mph,
and driving styles (yes that's a good chunk of it) i weigh around 300lbs, he's closer to 175.
the over all average for his ownership was 30.44mpg, while for me, it's 24.24mpg
I get 17-22 around town, 27-33 on the highway(as high as 39 on 1 trip)

100 pounds being a ~5MPG difference? If that were the case, I should be getting a lot more in all of my cars as none of them have that heavy *** spare tire and jack. I've also added weight to my Neon and the MPG stayed the same. It's about maintenance, amount of throttle and driving environment.

I'd bet you are getting less MPGs because of the difference in your drives. 40 miles on a highway going 70 MPH is going to give you better mileage than 5 miles at 50 MPH. You don't mention highway driving for your commute, so you are probably stopped a bit more than him too. My average moving speed (even with all of my long distance highway driving factored in) is ~38MPH and I live in the mountains, so I am going up and down 1,000'+ in elevation in 10-15 minutes of driving. I do a fair amount of idling, though, less than in the cities. My average MPG is around 23-24. If I can get out on the highway and drive a good distance at 70MPH, my MPGs are in the mid-30's.
