RE: Neon 2.0 bad gas mileage
A lot of us have the same problem and we're not sure what it is. I too have kept up with the maintenance and still suffer the same. I don't know what gas mileage your getting specifically but if it's 20< then I'm probably there with you.
I've heard the IAC's go bad amongst other things...no definitive fix for the mystery mpg

We "might" be able to drive 180 miles with a tank of gas. We have changed all the normal items, such as plugs, oil, coolant, etc.
Could a bad power steering pump be a cause too?? I need to replace because it seems that the either the pulley or the pump is going out.

I know this is old but did you recify the problem? Scary when gas is $3.70 a gallon. No MIL codes, car runs/starts idles fine and there is no smell of gas. Thought the sending unit plug broke again but no.... It's scary to watch your gas gage drop so fast. Almost more economical to drive a V8. I drive like an old lady too.
I'm driving 100+ miles a day. Typically I could do that on 1/4 of a tank, now my Neon uses over 3/4 of a tank!
Going to try changing plugs.

The big thing is how much idling do you do. I usually get 29-31 mpg in the summer, but I let mine warm up quite a bit and also use it on the construction sites as a "hotbox" to keep socks and gloves dry in the winter. Sometimes it idles 8-10 hours a day. My winter average is about 22 mpg. 2003 auto w/255,000 miles. I do run premium gas WITHOUT any ethanol as much as possible
