i have a 2002 dodge neon rt. i have simple bolt ons cai cat back exhaust and headers. i would like to turbo this car i cant find any kits on internet everyone is telling me i have to get it custom made. they are also telling me it will be a very costy situation one guy said 6 grand another said 10 grand because you cant turbo a magnum engine i dont know where to go for this would it have to be a low compression turbo due to the high compression of the magnum engine any help would be great.

Why is a turbo kit not an option for a magnum engine? The compression is VERY similar to any other stock sohc engine. Personally, I think the magnum engine is really not that much better than a sohc. Before everyone gets upset, it is still an sohc. Tuning options are minimal with having only one cam. While the poor exhaust ports of the baseline sohc heads has been revised, the it does not have removable cam shaft caps. This greatly limits the use of radically high profile after market cam shafts. If you are going boost (and are limited by budget are the emission laws of Cali) then use the magnum. Otherwise, stop wasting your time and get a dohc head. The magnum heads are nearly triple the cost of a dohc head, and still falling short in performance. On the n/a platform, the magnum head falls short after low 14's. The 2.4L dohc is just getting started. I am not an sohc hater by any means. In fact, I believe that some machine work can be done to give a magnum head removable cam caps. Doubt it would be worth is with the limited tuning options though. I'll say it again. The no sohc head is worth modifying for an n/a neon, if you plan on going past low 14's in the 1/4. Boost is another story, but the dohc makes more with less. [/rant]

Default neon

the compression of the magnum engine is 9.8.1 this is a higher compression due to the pistons if you know what a magnum engine is the pistons have raised heads to give "higher" compression hense the more horsepower so it is hard to find a turbo for the magnum engine for me anyways it would have to be a low compression turbo because of the high compression of my motor if you run high compression turbo with the magnum engine it will blow if you can find anykits i would appreciate it

you can still run low boost 5-7psi safely deff going to have to run 91 or high octane and a water/meth injection system would be a wise investment also...9.8 to 1 isn't that high compression yet its when you start running 10.5 to 1 that you really don't want to run boost...

The higher output of the magnum engine does not come solely from its compression ratio. That is the same compression ratio of the 1G sohc engine. The higher output comes from:

-higher flowing multi-valve intake manifold
-high profile cam shaft
-larger cast exhaust ports
-tubular exhaust manifold

All sohc pistons are flat top. Even the magnum. The smaller combustion chamber is what makes the compression ratio higher. That is why the dohc headhas a lower compression ratio, when used with sohc pistons. The dohc head has a larger combustion chamber, compared to the sohc cylinder head. This is also why the dohc pistons are domed, as this helps fill that extra space.

Your quest for lower compression will end with lower compression pistons. Custom or forged.
