Default Oil Light ?

About 2 months back I made a trip from NC to MO and then back to NC with my 03 neon. On the way back the oil light would randomly come on. I would check the levels, looked for any leaks but didnt see anything. The light would go off if I turned the car off and then back on. My friend and I figured that maybe it was doing it when it was hot (as we made the whole trip back in one day which is around 13hrs of driving). When we got back I had no more light issues and just let it slip my mind.

The past week or so the light has randomly come on and the car hasnt been driving long (implying it shouldnt be hot). It actually has come on when the car has been sitting cold :/ The levels are still good. So, what could this be? I dont want my car to blow its engine up or anything

Probably the sensor. My light came on everytime I started the car after it sat long enough to cool down. My sensor was literally ready to fall out of the block, and was broken anyways. Costs something like $12 from a dealer. Get yourself a 1 1/16" deep socket too.

Could also be a short in the harness. Have a look at the wiring and connector to your oil sensor and crank position sensor.

So the light came on again and this time I got the code. The car told me P0522. I think that is P0522 is Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Low Voltage. I dont have a manual for this car (basic or repair) so anyone have any guidance on what/where i'm actually looking for?

OK the code P:0522 is the computer telling you that your oil pressure light is on. All the computer knows is that it’s getting a bad reading, could be a real problem or a bad sensor.
You have two options:
1) Replace the sensor and see if that fixes the issue or
Preferred
2) Remove the sensor and connect a pressure gauge temporarily to verify the oil pressure and then replace the sensor if required.

The oil sender sensor is located on the rear of the engine below the exhaust manifold. There is a section in the Haynes manual that shows how to do this.

If this does not resolve the problem then chances are you have some major engine work ahead.
