HELP!! 05 Neon SXT Trans Leaking and overheating.
I recently ( 1 week ago) did a trans fluid change, with the new filter and gasket. During this process as I was installing back the screws I had one strip. I left it alone, and hoped for the best. Well now a week later, as i was driving to work I smelt something burning like trans fluid. As I was getting into work my car started to slip and then kicked in. I parked it and checked to see if it was leaking from the pan, it was wet but only dripping a little. Checked my ATF dip stick and it was almost empty. I went and got 4 quarts of ATF poured it in and was able to drive. A couple of hours later it started to slip again, as I was pulling over my car started to overheat. I got out and can see a trail that looks like trans fluid, and then it was running down the sidewalk drainage. It looked more water down this tie like it was mixed with water. Poured 4 more quarts, was able to make it home, but I can see white ( I think it was white, this was t night) smoke coming out from underneath and over heating again. I looked underneath and I can see a lot of what looked like trans fluid leaking but not from the pan area( which I though it might be from the stripped screw) but further down almost the middle. Just dripping a lot. And i can smell the trans fluid burning. Any one have any idea what is the cause or if I might have done something when I replace the gasket and filter for the ATF. Thank you
May be co-incidence, and hope it is not this... but here's my experience

Thank you for your info. It was exactley the same issue. It happened all of a sudden. I had my car towed to a transmission shop. They first called me and told me that I needed a new radiator, my transmission needed to be flushed and the cost would be $850. Then they called me back and told me that my transmittion was damaged, Once the two fluids mix the clutch discs inside the tranny will wear down to nothing (the coolant destroys the surface of the clutch discs) resulting in transmission failure. So now it's a cost of$2200 for a rebuilt or $2700 for a new one. Thank you again for help.
