Solenoid Problem

I have a 2002 Dodge Neon and I was over in New Jersey and it drove fine on the way there. Well on the way back the car started to make a noise after you drove past 30mph. Turns out the mechanic that it was brought to said I would need a new solenoid.

turns out the website said it would work on a 2002 neon but the paper in the box said for 98 cars or earlier.
it looked the same so we installed it and then the car will be in drive and wont do anything. it will just go backwards a lil bit or just sit there. and fluid leaked out under the car.
we didnt have the middle bolt the tightest on there and the cable that plugs into this wasnt on too tight but it was staying and we did hook the cable back into the tube above the middle screw.
any ideas on what i can do to resolve this problem?
Neon has 101,145 miles on it.

Sorry...what? You left the old gasket there? If that's what you meant, then yes, that's a problem.
Well, you should never leave the old gasket on anything. I'm not quite sure how you got the old solenoid off without taking some of the old gasket with it. If your "mechanic" did that, I'd take the car far, far away from there.
my question is that if i got it completely silver with none of the old gasket left on whatsoever then it will work?

No, you need to put the new gasket on or it will leak just the same. The surface needs to be carefully scraped (it's aluminum; it'll gouge fairly easily) clean until it is all silver and no gasket material in any of the holes/ports, and then the new gasket put on.
As for "will it work," no one can say yes or no. If that wasn't the problem or it's a DOA part, then probably not. If it really is the problem and it's a good part, then it should.
