Would that just cause only 1st and 2nd gear, if thats is whats happened to the car then I am affraid to say its beyond echonomical repair. The parts and Labour would be twice the cars value. Thats a real shame.

Yea I know its a real shame it has to go, but chrysler have such a bad name here people wont touch the cars. There gearbox is shocking if I am honest. I also had the car serviced only 3 times in its life all by chrysler and this still happens. Bang on when they where due.

I am looking at least £700 for parts and repairs, and I could buy an RT for less money with no problems but I doubt I be going anywhere near a chrysler in the future.

Dave, I hate to see you scrap that Neon, I really do, but don't blame you if it's not cost effective to keep it.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure Master Tech knows what he's talking about. As I understand it, he works for Chrysler and is a certified tranny expert, which is why I asked him to come over from where I read some of his posts on the Durango forum and give his input.

I'm sure sorry for the confusion, I kept looking at the 2001 Neon transmissions available and only saw the 3 speed (same as I have) for that year....didn't occur to me that they'd have the electronic tranny there that year.

Would also like to thank Master tech for clearing that up for me and offering the part numbers.

Don't let it spoil you on Chrysler completely, all manufacturers have their mistakes and problems. I've been driving Chrysler products for most of my life, can't really remember a time when I didn't own at least 1 or 2 (I have 5 right now), and they're generally easier to work on than anything I've owned, and have fewer problems overall.

I suppose it's possible I look back with "rose colored glasses", considering I've driven cars like the old Challengers, 'Cuda's, Roadrunners, Chargers, Imperials, and about every type of Dodge truck built, but I've never been as happy with any Chevy I've driven as I have with the Dodges. More power, more rugged, more comfortable (mostly, except for the ride in the trucks)...generally just better in all ways, in my opinion. Only thing Chevy has over them is the price and availability of parts.

Dave, I really wish I had time (and money....paying tuition for my 2 oldest kids is about to break me) to come see you, I could turn that 700 pounds into just the cost for the parts...and of course a couple of meals, and the beer...come to think of it, maybe it'd be cheaper for the mechanic to do it

No mate, beer, food, and lodge is cheaper than a mechanic. Here the going rate is approx £80 an hour. Your probably looking at about 2 days to remvoe the tranny (Yes might take less, but they will say it will take that) then a few days to rebuild it, if they actually will. Lets break it down.

£500 Labour (+vat)
£100 Oil + Filter (£50 oil + £36 filter + Vat)
£150 in parts lets say, I will have to buy them from chrysler here that be WAY! more

Then we need to teach the machine the new tranny, and a diagnostic plug in thats a further £80

If I took this to chrysler, I would be looking at least £1500 + Vat and then they will only bodge job it. They wont do all the upgrades etc. I am supprissed this was not a recall on how fragile these boxes where. I just noticed another chrysler with only 45K miles on the clock with FSH going for £400

I do come off as forward I'm sure. I don't "sugar coat" what I have to say; I just say it. No, I did not offer a solution, because I was not positive on what it might be. I try to never say what something is unless I'm sure, especially if there isn't money to be played with. I am not saying that was case with what brhodes had suggested for you to try; that's just my take on it. No, I do not know the specifics of what can break inside of an automatic transmission to cause problem "X," but I can offer the possible causes and information available to me.

I will accept your apology and offer mine. Having been on this forum for so long, I do have the pleasure of running into personalities of every kind. I understand I'm not everyone's cup of tea and being the forward, direct person that I am follows that very well. I completely understand your expectations and your "knee-jerk" reaction. If I can offer anything to say, it would be that yes, I'm forward and direct, but understand I mean it in a much less offensive way that it comes off.

Once more, my apologies to you.

I have some good news and bad news. I went nuts on the phone to Chrysler UK customer services about this issue, which is now Fiat I might add. They have agreed if I take it to a dealer and pay for the fee to get it diagnosed they will look at good will to get the car repaired if it is found to be a defect at its manufacture ( I love UK law soemtimes ) well at 30,000 miles and 3 services done by chrysler I am in a good position.

That's fabulous, Dave. Yep, sometimes it's good to "force the hand" of someone like a car dealer. Most wouldn't want the public stink or ****storm that would result from a customer going to the media and playing the victim, and will often take measures to make you happy. Not always, but sometimes. I have to admit that I have "threatened" wal mart managers with calling 1800walmart and reporting their lousy management skills. Last time I did it was 3 years ago after buying a set of tires. One of these brand new tires separated after about 1000 miles, and I had a hard time getting them to replace it because I didn't buy the road hazard warranty. I got tired of arguing and just called the corporate HQ (this time I didn't even bother to threaten), and the next day the local Wally World called me asking if I'd please bring in that wheel/tire, they'd be happy to replace it free of charge. Sometimes it's the squeaky wheel, you know....

Ok Chrysler dont want to help, as the car was not serviced yearly. So they riggled out of it because although it was done at correct times on the millage it was not done correctly at the age element. So it looks like I have hit a wall

According to them, the transmission doesn't ever need to be serviced. It's got "lifetime" fluid?
