rubbed the light post with my front bumper pulling into my narrow driveway no dent but a nice white spot were it was black. I was a bit lethargic by the time I got home from work... guess my judgment was off

Put the new pads and rotors on earlier. Definitely needed them

The diesel since the last oil change (Pennzoil 5w-30) has not been hauling (except for the 01), but as quick as the wife wraps up in NC, hope to go back to hauling/flippin vehicles. I'm looking at Pennzoil Platnum or pure plus. My diesel guy mentioned Schaeffers 5w-40 or 7000 (we have seen -6 degrees this winter). Loads around 8k. Using Fleet guard filter. Currently change every 5k.

Gassers, looking at Platnum plus or Ultra 5w-30. General transportation since December (bed loads only). Currently change every 3k.

So if anyone can give some history on Pennzoil Platnum plus or Ultra when posting in this thread for oil change I'd appreciate it. K.

WUT?! WUUUUUT! WHAT?!?!?!?!

First of all disregarding my hate of that wax filled crap that voids most heavy equipment warranties called pennzoil....

The cummins turbo diesel engine needs 15w-40 API CJ-4/CI-4+ rated diesel oil.

oil for diesels and oil for gasolines are NOT the same stuff. Diesel oils include soot inhibitors that gasolines don't have.

Then we come to your overly frequent oil changes... again we are dealing with diesel engines here, not gas engines...

5k is too frequent and you are pissing away money.

7k for dino oil and 15k+ for synthetic oil as your mileage intervals.

I run AMSOIL heavy duty diesel and marine full synthetic oil (15w-40 API CI-4+/CH-4)

I change oil somewhere between 15k and 20k..

Oil black as soot in a diesel does not mean the oil is bad or has broken down. Soot does not hurt the lubricity or viscosity of the oil.

^Sorry, typed it wrong. My last oil change for my diesel was 15w-40 Long life diesel oil Pennzoil meeting requirements of CJ-4, (according to my oil change station). I do change every 5k, and change my fuel filter every 10k. 30 weights are for my gassers.

Thanks for your response. K.

Put $75 in the tank and checked air pressure in the tires.

^^Ham Bone, I hope your quarry is more careful dumping the scoop in the bed than our quarry. The last dump was instant and over loaded for my 1500 (plus my springs are a bit weak). Last I recall the only thing you have left is a 241 transfer case to make it a 2500 4x4.

Quaker State was the only thing I used to run in my old Ford PU (Dad got me on Pennzoil). Considering Jig's experience, I'll probably follow his lead going forward on the diesel. K.

John Deere and Komatsu machinery will void machine warranties on those several hundred thousand to multi-million dollar machines if pennzoil is run in them. Tell me that doesn't say something about that oil

You can tell when a car was run on it... you will see wax buildup in the oil cap.

Thanks Jigabop. The diesel will soon be a 5th wheel hauler, so I need it humming on the best for pulling a big camper. Frequency is the only concern, and I could probably live with 10k between oil changes.

On another note, I fueled up the 97 and calced 13.0 even mpg's (not bad at all for a 360 V8). K.

Edit: Thanks Corbo, I've also been thinking Rotella for my diesel next oil change, and would agree with 7k between changes.
Edit 2 Thanks Jigs on confirmation, and for the gassers GTX!
