The early Ford push butto 4wd systems were cheap to repair, and basically never had problems as long as the tcase etc were lubricated properly.

Push button to get 4wd is just dumb anything elec to control 4wd is dumb. The more manual the better, when I need 4wd it better work 100%. I will take manual locking hubs and a shifter for 4wd any day of the week. I am not that lazy to get out and lock two hubs in.

Why would you wait until the middle of the mud hole to have 4 wheel drive though? My thought on it was always: "Engage before you need it." Let ya get further before you were REALLY stuck.....

And that's why you lock up before you go lol.

Yep

When I had trucks with part time hubs if I even thought I was going out 4wding or needing 4wd for bad weather, I would just lock the hubs in. Many a time I would stop on the side of the road lock the hubs get passed by all my buddies not stopping to lock in, only to pass them later on in the mud hole or snow drift stuck in 2wd.
