Default fixed a clogged cat by gutting it (with pics)

i bought my truck about three months ago im trying to get caught up on alot of past due maintenance. just did a leaking timing chain gasket now temp. fixing a clogged cat due to what probly a blown plenum that needs to get done next. so i unbolted the passenger side of the pipe that goes from cat to engine. coudnt get the driver side. (rusted on) so i Sawzawed it in front of the cat. than seperated the muffler from the cat and pulled the cat off. i took a pc of copper pipe and a hammer and whent to work. i also took the muffler off. (the muffler had a whole that i put a 8x15 in 22 gauge heat shield from home depot, linked up two plumber pipe clamps (with the screws) and wrapped it around the muffler and 22 gauge heat shield i did that rig up a couple months back cost me about 8 bucks) vs a new muffler. any way i dropped the muffler and tail pipe and straight piped the tail pipe to the gutted cat. and hung it back up.

it picks up speed really well (but is that could be due to not being clogged) but the idle wants to drop below 500 and stall out (but it doesnt stall it jumps back up to bout 750
however i lost torque power. i could pull up to a curb and just put some pressure on the gas and go up onto the curb last night after i did the cat and straight pipe i tryed and the rear end just slipped. this set up is a temp fix. i like the speed but hate the noise it doesnt even sound good just obnoxious

Not to bust your ***** (well, yes) the correct fix is to have it replaced. A bad cat indicates problems with the emissions system, which you've diagnosed as being a bad plenum. Hope you kept the innards so when you get a new cat the muffler shop can recycle the old one for the platinum content.

Sounds like a lot of other people's trucks in my area.

They all got stupid sounding muffler's and/or lack of cat's that have their truck's so LOUD, that's all it is, LOUD.

No tone or definition.

My 360 with stock exhaust sounds better then a lot of the trucks around here.

Back pressure is bad. The trouble with gutting the cat is, it introduces a lot of turbulence into the exhaust flow. The cat really isn't shaped well for promoting flow when empty......

I'm not eager to spend $200 on a cat and $150 in labor to have it installed but I don't want to make a bad situation worse by not having enough back pressure to allow the truck to run right. BTW, my 02 sensor was way dirtier than yours.

A new catc isn't 200 bucks, so do the labor yrself and the fact ur O2 sensor was dirty means what?
