Rugged/Manly Cell Phones
I've got a small camping lot way up in the north Georgia mountains above Clayton right on a trout stream. By small I mean it's not big enough for a camper behind my truck to park on, maybe a small pop-up would fit, I wanna say it's 30' x 25'. I've had it since the mid '90s and have NEVER had a hint of a signal up there, lost it with Verizon not halfway up the mountain.
When I lived in south Georgia I would make the six hour drive up at least five or six times a year to tent camp and fish, but when the folks took sick I've barely been up there. I think I went twice in '09 and once in '10 and that's been the only trips since '07. From where I am in Florida most of the time now, it's a solid 11 hour drive. Planning to hit it for trout in April and I'm curious to see if the AT&T is any better up there...

OK, I have an HTC Inspire, and long story short it's a farking piece of shiat. I hate it and am incredibly close to smashing it. Last night, I slammed it on my desk because it wouldn't send a text message and ended up cracking the screen before I threw it across the room. Battery life sucks, the thing could be next to the cell tower and still lose the signal, and in general, it sucks.
So, my question is can I just get another phone and swap the micro-SIM and go about my happy way? I took this piece of shiat back to AT&T a couple of weeks ago and talked with the guy who sold me on the phone. He spent 15 minutes updating the software, claiming it would "fix" a bunch of known issues (ie battery life), but it actually runs worse. I even had it boot up to a command prompt screen one day before the updates were installed. I've had people telling me to root it fark that) and install task killers (works great, I've watched the tasks respawn right after they were killed, plus more). The touch screen sucks *** as well, not to mention how a-g-o-n-i-z-i-n-g-l-y s-l-o-w t-h-e d-o-w-n-l-o-a-d-s a-r-e (and that's when I'm in town picking up full bars).
Did I mention this phone is a piece of shiat? Once I settle into the new house I'm thinking of going back to AT&T & telling the guy, "Look, let me swap out this piece of shiat for a different phone and I'll sign up for U-verse; otherwise, I'll sell the farker on e-Bay and get a different phone anyway."

AT&T has a 30 day policy on all new accounts, account changes and hardware purchases including phones. 30 days is plenty of time to determine if a particular phone sucks *** or not - hell I usually know in 48 hours, but I give it a week just to see if I can get used to it's quirks or if it'll straighten itself out.
I've returned a couple of phones within the 30 days with no questions asked. I have my mom on my account and she's the most HIGH MAINTENANCE woman on the planet. I'll spend literally 4 hours in the store with her while she has the salesperson showing her every phone in the store and explain every feature before she'll pick one out only to have her bi*ch about the phone before I get her home.
I believe she's on her third phone since I fired Verizon and switched to AT&T while I'm still using (and very happy with) the LG Thrill I got when I signed up.
I would have taken it back if it's within 30 days, if it's over 30 days old, then it's your own damn fault for not doing something about it sooner. Of course now that you smashed the thing, if I were Mr. American Telephone and Telegraph I'd tell you to stick it up your wazoo, but that's just me... LMAO...

As far as the rest of your post, that's "yes" and "no". I had upgraded from an old Nokia to this thing, so it was like going from backwoods Kentucky to downtown London -- major culture shock and being enamored with everything new and different. Also, I didn't use my phone for as many of the tasks that I do now, let along the problems that took a while to crop up, especially those I noted that appeared *after* the alleged software fix. The only other time I had an issue with a phone was back when I "upgraded" to a free (cheapie) LG clamshell phone, which I did return in about 30 days (may have been more), the main reason being that I couldn't hear it ring even from 5-feet away. That's when I bought my Nokia outright and was a happy camper for the next 4+ years.
Anyway, one small fact in my favor is that I've been with AT&T since 1995, so every time I call with a question or concern I am profusely thanked for being such a loyal customer. That's why I'm leaning toward telling them, "Look, this phone sucks and sometimes it takes longer than 30-days to tell if something just isn't right. Don't believe me? Go to the courthouse and talk to the next five people you see filing for divorce."
1995 - WOW! Yeah that should give you a little leeway with them. Everybody I know switches companies like changing their socks, which is way I thought I was long-tenured with Verizon from 2002-2011. I dated a chick for a little under a year in '09-'10 and in that time she had at least seven phones (might have been more, I can't remember) and three different providers! I switched simply based on price - Verizon wanted basically $168 for two phones with LESS minutes and LESS texts than I could get from AT&T for $142.
Whatever phone you get, I'd suggest an Otterbox or Ballistic case for those times your temper gets the best of you, LOL. Seriously though, I've dropped mine numerous times on concrete and even slammed the rear hatch door of my Grand Cherokee on it once and the phone doesn't have so much as a scratch on it...

Holy **** do i feel your pain. if i wouldve known you were gonna get that phone i would have told you to run. ive had it for a year. been completely replaced TWICE. once for the screen cracking and the second time for the volume button falling off and the whole op system failing. im on the third and the screen is falling out and the volume button has fallen out of this one as well. not to mention when its not physically broken it sucks as whole. ive been praying for my contract to end so i can get a new phone. stop at nothing to get rid of it and get a new one no doubt!

Well I don't know anything about at&t, but I have a Sprint family plan with two HTC evos and my bill is $180 a month! But I also have unlimited everything and gave the second phone to my mother so I can keep in touch with her.
Sadly I have to stick up for apple only smart phone I have used that doesn't have glitches....and after a couple years they don't slow down as much as a android based phone....there is a reason they sell so many
Pretty simple to figure out, and don't have problems with service in my parts
Also a otterbox case is pretty stout, but if you spend anytime around water, put your phone in your pocket, or want a locking clip, life proof cases are where it's at....only waterproof case I know of for any phone
