Drew, I don't know if you've heard of http://pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=NC but there are a bunch of ethanol free stations near you. I wonder if This stuffs results would be noticeable if you were to run 3 or 4 tanks of pure gas before adding it.

the problem I face is finding the rec gas with the right octane.. 89 is pushing the envelope, but can be justified with a decent octane booster (that raises in whole points, not just tiny percentages)..
Emerald Isle is closest, but don't have over 86 octane.. Swansboro is next, but 87/89 is best they can do, and the pumps that have the rec gas are on the water side of the stations.. I can't get to them with the truck unless they let me back there, and they are reluctant to do so in broad daylight..
Morehead City has full out 93 rec gas, but is about 25 miles away.. If I need gas and I'm screwing around over there, I'll dang sure get it, but it isn't worth the trip (I'd burn at least an 1/8th tank just going and coming back)..
the trick to using the rec gas I can get, is finding a suitable octane booster that boosts in full rands rather than some strange advertised method they, well- advertise.. This kinda goes back to my first paragraph in the first post in this thread.. crazy, huh?
thanks for the link! I'd lost it along the way somewhere.

'Blue Fuel' is the dang ticket.. It's 113 octane usually, and is ethanol free.. racing fuel.. it is hard to dang find, but sometimes a mom-n-pop will have it, especially if it's near a sanctioned drag track.. it is likely a full 50 cents to a dollar more expensive per gallon, but it is absolutely worth running if you're going to be hauling a heavy load or pulling.. it burns a lot cooler, and is absolutely predictable- so you can keep the racier tunes on the engine while working the crap out of a hot engine, and it usually offsets the extra cost..
when I pulled a travel trailer around, and ran at highway speeds of 70+, I would get around 6-8MPG (5500# trailer + gear).. with the Blue Fuel, I'd get 10~11MPG.... The truck ran cooler, and didn't work near as hard.. I knew of two stations that sold it at the time- one near local (since closed) and one near destination (400 or so miles away; Andrews NC, I've no clue if they are still open)..
I'd top the tank and a couple 5 gallon containers, and roll.. I'd have to stop for gas a couple times in between, but would drop the extra five gallons in first- then top with ethanol... I'd sip fumes to get to the place I mountain biked, and would top both tank and cans for the trip back..
I put that crap in a VTX 1800 I had, and had set up for drag, and it floggin' REALLY liked it.. I used a 'commanderIII' programmer, and would fully advance the timing on that thing.. I ran it once in 30* weather, on Blue Fuel, and though I can't prove it, I bet I saw 20~30 extra ponies from that thing.. It was around 1k# because it was still street legal, and had a HP rating of 165- so bumping it that much was a huge thing.. that's the fastest that bike ever ran- 145mph 1/4, 120mph 1/8, if I recall correctly.. for a v-twin, that rascal would RUNNNnnn..
God, I miss that bike...

Around here they used to get your id and have you sign a document saying you wont run it on the street. I don't know of anybody who was ever cited for running it but in theory at least it's supposed to be illegal or at least it once was. It's confusing to ma as to why though since there is a station down the street selling Trick right out of the pump.

In Georgia it's damn near impossible to find ethanol free gas and I'm seeing almost ALL the stations that have had "farm diesel" (which used to sell for about 40% less than regular diesel) is removing it as well.
You can't run it in ANY of these newer diesel trucks with all their emissions crap, but the 5.9 CTD loved it as did my old Ford 7.3 when I had it. I'm thinkin' it's the end of an era - thanks to our tree-huggin' government...
