My 97 360 wasn't as obvious as my sisters 2000 Ram 360's plenum gasket blowout which had a whole section between the bolt holes blown out where no gasket was even attempting to seal. Mine on the other hand was much less obvious, but since the gasket seemed frail and hard as well as stuck to the plenum plate itself and along with the oil residue at the bottum toward some of the edges I figured it was most likely blown too. Mileage 165,124 miles.

Any machine shop will/should have the means to sandblast and hot dip. It's a very minor cost.
My machinist did not want to chance with sand blast in case pieces were not completely dislodged and somehow would end up in the engine. I think this is a preference thing on the machinist and their equipment quality.
So a hot dip for $20 was happy enough for me.
