Default Look's like a move North is in our future.. :icon_snow:

Well I learned yesterday that my grandparent's have decided to give me their farmhouse in Virginia. My grandmother moved to Fairfax, Va (where her Daughter and hubby live) for work, my grandfather's been going back and forth since he own's a business were he's at now but, will soon be making the move himself, he's getting older and too tired to paint and fix fence's, plus the 5hr drive each way.

It's a Pre-WW2 farmhouse built by slave's. 2 stories, an attic, wrap around porch, kitchen and laundry room added on, they've recently remodeled the kitchen too.

House sit's on 52 acres of Virginia mountain's, a creek that runs from one side of the property to the other, I spent a lot of time as a child in that creek, we all did actually.

13 year's ago my father died and my mom didn't want him buried, didn't want him to rot away, so we cremated him and spread his ashes throughout the garden, that was his favorite place to be as a child.

Anyway's, I've been in Georgia for just over 4 year's now, and for some crazy reason I like it here.

But the thought of not having to make rent payment's is HUGE, even though I'd have to pay for whatever has to be fixed. I'd also be closer to my family, which is all in Virginia. Plus there really isn't much of anything for work here, I have a good job, but I'm tired of driving, which I do a LOT of...

Wifey doesn't really like cold weather and I've been saying I need to go back up north to "toughen up a bit", since I don't like cold weather too much either anymore... But she's all for the move. Plus I'd like my son to see and experience snow, all the girls have.

Given the financial situation we'd probably have to stay here until tax season when we could really afford to move, I doubt the biggest U-Haul Trailer would hold all our stuff.

Anyways, what would ya'll do? Any thought's or "be warned!!" type deal's?

This is kinda a big move.....

I moved from Vidalia to Florida when my parents got sick in '05. Had/have a lot of friends in Toombs and Coffee Counties, some in Douglas are so close they are more like family than most of my family. I love the area and go back as much as I can get up there and I will move back hopefully before too much longer.

Although north Georgia is more like where I grew up in the Catskills of NY, something about that HOT dusty south Georgia farmland and dense swamps gets in your blood. My best fishing and hunting was done in south Georgia.

Hard to pass up all the land and home and the opportunity you have in Virginia, but once south Georgia gets in your blood, it's there for good.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do...

If the house was even remotely liveable.... I would have a VERY hard time turning down that deal.......

Or....

You don't wanna leave a good job, and scenery you love..... So, let ME move into the house.

if someone offered to give me a house and 52 acres i'd move so fast it'd be blur.
are you getting title to this place? or just free rent?

i just moved my son from Augusta Ga to Memphis in a 24 ft budget truck. truck rental was about $380 for 3 days and diesel fuel was about $250. we loaded the truck in about 1/2 day. unloaded in about 3 hours.

i lived in southern Indiana for several years on the Ohio river at the Kentucky border. I liked it. Great hunting, fishing, trucks, gardens, winter sports, snow skiing. it was a blast.

I will have the title to the place/land. I pretty much lived in Virginia my whole life, we did travel a lot (for my dad's work, not military).

I think it would be a better place to solidify our future. Nice and quiet, lot's of open land to roam.

Pre WWII built by slaves? Don't you mean Civil War era? Either way, it sounds like a really good deal for you and the entire family (meaning your wife and kids). Remember, always do what's best for your family and not what your relatives want or prefer.

I don't know, detail's are kinda weird about that. You are probably right. But my grandparent's have always said it was Pre-WW2, she could have been wrong about it being build by slave's though... It's brick and was sorta hard for them to get insured, but they did

It survived Hurricane Hugo back in '89.

My relative's are happy for us, but I'm 100% sure that when time comes my father in law will ask to come too, sorry bout his luck.

I moved from Texas to the northeast a few years ago. While I miss EVERYTHING about Texas and the south I do appreciate a true four seasons this area provides; it really is beautiful come fall. Winter hasn't been too large of an adjustment besides the unusual blizzards we had two years in a row (not this past year). I went from no snow to a storm that dropped 13" in 2 days. It was a shocker, but really, it's not that cold overall and is a nice area.

With that said, I am actively trying to move back to Texas. haha
