I've had two GM trucks, a Z71 pickup and a Z71 Avalanche and really was disappointed in the power of the 5.3L V8. I also had quite a few nuisance problems with both, only one powertrain related (I had the rear driveshaft fail on the pickup with only 21k on it but they warranty replaced it with no problem). The Avalanche was another story as I felt it could barely get out of it's own way with the 5.3 and due to it's sheer weight, in-town MPGs were horrible (I mean like worse than the Chrysler 5.9 bad), although on the highway it wasn't too bad. My biggest issues were fit/finish on all the seals (especially rear window and bed covers) leaked from day one and GM never really could get them to stop - to the point that the dealer/regional rep basically gave up and told me that due to the design (versatility) of the rear of the cab (it folds flat to give you a bed that basically extends to the back of the front seats for those not familiar with the Avalanche) - that leaks were inevitable (not something you want to hear regarding a NEW $45,000 TRUCK!!!!).
I've heard that since the bankruptcy GM has made MAJOR strides in product quality (something I've not seen out of Chrysler/Daimler/Cerberus/Fiat to date), and have heard a LOT of good about the newest truck/SUV line-ups. Hate to lose another "Mopar Brother" but I'm sure you'll be very happy with your new truck.
As far as the "Cash for Clunkers" deal, there is no government sponsored event anymore, but many dealers will use the term as a sales pitch to entice more business. I see the term every once in a while still in local ads...
