Default Jeep YJ

Looking at a 1990 jeep yj at a local dealership to use as a project vehicle/trail toy and just wanted some input on them.

I know they're considered the black sheep of jeeps because of their square headlights, problematic transmissions, awful electronic controlled carbs, and emission equipment.

However..this one has an ax15 trans, a beautiful engine (possibly rebuilt), all new vac and fuel lines, and a holly carb.

While I would rather have a CJ, they are harder to come by in good condition and they are a hell of a lot more expensive.

I could probably get this one for around $2,000 - $2,500

Will post pics soon..the exterior is rough and has some ugly offroad lights but there is no rust

All jeeps should have round headlights lol!! On a serious note the YJ's arent bad at all.. Alot of the jeep crowd frowns upon them but I would buy one if the price was right.. I had a 02 Wrangler and I loved it.. I kick myself for getting rid of it.. Just check out what rear end it has in it.. The Dana 35's will break with very little effort at all.. I know cause I had to rebuild mine about 5 times before I traded it in. Other then that they will run for darn near forever if you take care of it

I like YJ's because they aren't everybody's favorite accessorized cliche *****-mobile.

That being said, they are still a Wrangler, so I'm not really into them, but if I were ever to buy one it would be a '91-'96 with a 4.0 and ax-15.

So I'm guessing you never had a 70's CJ with the AMC V-8 in it. The Yuppie Jeep series never even deserved the badge.

Forgot to check the rear axle. Dohh. But if it is a dana 35, I can just swap it out for an exsploder 8.8 or something similar.

I'd love to have it with the 4.0...However the price is kinda right on this one and my dad is currently driving a jeep cherokee (which I bought for him and will eventually get back) with the 4.0 in it. So a possible swap might be in the future.

I haven't driven the jeep yet so we'll see how it is then. I'll hopefully be doing that tomorrow though.

I had a '94 YJ I bought in '97 with 38,000 miles on it from a guy who knocked up his 17 year old g/f and had to sell it. Stole it for $7800 drove the hell out of it, beat on it on weekends and sold it in '01 with 79,000 miles on it for more than I paid for it. Was a 4.0 with a manual tranny - best combo IMO. The 2.5 four-cylinder is a turd IMO.

The day after I bought it I did a full tune-up on it as the original owner never did anything to it other than oil changes. Never had a single issue with it that I didn't cause for the four+ years I had it, LOL.

For 2K it is worth it even if there's no motor. Go for it.
