building a most fuel economic ram 1500 5.2L
Its no phenomenon, I bought my ram with the standard trans on purpose, my brother claimed his 5spd ram was getting around the same mpg before he sold it. When I drove home with my gallon of gas I did not know how many miles away from home I was and was expecting to run out again before making it home so I didn't worry about dIriving conservatively. My tire pressure was and still is low in at least 1 tire. Tire size is stock in the front and slightly bigger in the rear. When I am trying to drive conservatively I use the torque app on my android, I never trust the mpg reading to be accurate but it does help to watch the numbers and train yourself to keep them up. I have learned from friends using bullydog tuners that the biggest fuel saver is a better driver.
I use to get 19h/16c out of my 5.2 manual when it was new... but by ~75k those days where long gone... by 150k I was as bad as 12c, but a K&N and a good once over (service) got me back to 14c.
I'd be real happy to be back with numbers in the high teens.

Cap, rotor, wires, plugs, 14x3 air filter, exhaust and water pump have all been replaced recently. Not all of those have a effecy on fuel economy, but I believe good maintenance is key, especially in the ignition system.
