"Cool" that's a understatement, man just pure attitude from them. My truck draws oil burners like fly's to S*** once they see its a little 1500 gas truck all they do is stick there noise in the air and blow black smoke (that can't be good for the environment and dangerous as heck for people behind them). I'll stop here so I don't start a war or get banned.

They may be trying to sell them off there in GA, but down here in the land of oil, they keep buying them, running them into the ground, then selling them for $10k.

Haha sorry, i spend too much time on cumminsforum lol.
Vp44 is the name of the injection pump (not lift pump) on the 98.8-02 cummins and the cp3 is the injection pump used on the 03-13? Not sure if the 4th gens recieved a new pump, i dont think so...
CR is for common rail, the fuel flows thru a common fuel rail and then into the injectors instead of 6 seperate lines for each injector.
And 24V means 24 valve, as in 4 valves per cylinder--2 intake and 2 exhaust.

I believe cumminsforum has an acronym thread...idk

Hey thanks a lot guys for the responses. I looked into a smarty, with the basic: tuner, exh, cai, and clutch how will my EGTs be? That is also one concern. Exhaust would be a 5" MBRP.

Yea kids up here are the same way, they own then cuz it's "cool". I like diesels because a gas wouldn't hardly move the loads! Lol especially up hills. Everyone who buys a diesel to haul a boat makes me laugh.

Ive seen some boats that SHOULD have had a diesel pickup hauling them.... What is your main reason for getting a diesel?? What kind of loads will you be hauling?

your egt's should be fine, and thats the beauty of the smarty, its pretty much infinatly adjustable, my 07 i crank up pretty high and never gets hot with normal driving, if towing or getting hot, just grab the smarty and dial it down just a bit, or adjust the perameters till your happy and safe, they are awsome

also i woundnt spend the $ on mbrp, look around on ebay a bit, the last 5'' kit i bought was $300 shipped to the door, thats a new, full 5'' turbo back, alluminized

Oh for sure, but I'm talking about the kids hauling mommy and daddy's 21' wakeboard boats. The lightest trailer I have is a 39' gooseneck that weighs in LOADED at 19.5k. I use a duramax 3500 that sees 30,000+ a half dozen times a year and other than that its mainly 6 ton of hay on the trailer and a ton on the truck. (Duramax is not stock)

I need a 3500 but by asking people to compare the 2500 I get rid of the SRW vs DRW opinions and it focuses SOLEY on the motor and trans.

But I'm looking to get a Cummins because I think it will be better offroad, cheaper to mod, and one of the biggest thing is I can get a manual!! I'm going back an forth between a 2nd gen 24 Valve or the 5.9L common rail. Both will be a 4 door, long bed, 4x4 with a 6 speed and a 2500. Which ever I get will be getting a 6" lift with either 35s or 37's and the basic mods to get around 450hp ~1,000lb-ft.

So here are my questions. I'm a country boy so hauling a heavy *** load is the norm and seeing a good amount of offroad wheeling is normal too. Which of these trucks, 2nd or 3rd gen will suit my needs the best and hold together the best? What issues with the 3rd or 2nd gen have you noticed? Basically which truck do you think will work the best, $25k budget for EVERYTHING. Thanks guys!
think I already answered all of this on cumminsforum on an identical thread you posted there...

same answer though. you will have more money for mods doing the 2nd gen 24v as cost to buy an older truck is cheaper...

you can reach goal power with a CR via a smarty programmer or EFI Live tuning, gauges, and a clutch + lift pump, or you can reach it on a 24v vp44 with 7x.009 injectors, and a wiretap fueling box with gauges, lift pump, clutch, and a turbo. super B single or he351 should do the trick.

Oh ok, I'll look into those. I've just seen the MBRP kits for like 450 (aluminized).

I want a diesel because I'm used to them and I've hauled with a gas and with a diesel and the diesel doesn't kill itself to move a load. I've maxed out my drivers license GVW limit so many times its crazy. I'd kill gas...
