no vin is definitely a big issue as stated a half dozen times...

great price for a cummins, but not a cummins without a vin unless you want to part it out and scrap the rest, or make some kind of off highway only race truck...

how would one even go about registering a vehicle with no vin? in my mind i figure its stolen truck with cheap paint job to keep the previous owner looking in the wrong direction.

 

Exactly. That's all its good for if you ask me, a parts donor.

 

Plug a decent scanner into it, PCM also knows the VIN. If the ABS and Airbag lights aren't on, PCM VIN agrees with what the rest of the truck thinks it is. See if that vin matches the VIN on the title.

I would also check to see (if that is indeed the correct vin...) if the vehicle has a salvage title. (indicating is was totaled, rebuilt, and re-titled)

If the VIN does NOT match the title, talk to the cops, and verify the truck is NOT stolen, and what the process would be (and how much it costs....) to get that particular issue taken care of.

 

Owner says he has the title, and that it is clear. He's had the truck for less than a month. I knew the owner before him as well, and he's had the truck for at least year.

This is very simple... NO VIN PLATE = ILLEGAL.

But if you want to take the chance, it'll be you sitting in front of a judge. And if your lucky, it'll be without a jumpsuit.

The rivets that hold it on are "special". You cannot buy them. If the plate is attached without these rivets (use of standard rivets), it is also ILLEGAL. If you look at any vin plate, you'll notice that the rivets are star shaped.
