Default 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 Water pump questions

i have to change the bypass hose above the water pump. i read on here that i should replace the water pump, fan clutch and timing chain but i would rather not mess with the timing.. whats your opinions and how hard is it?

pull the pump, then timing cover. rotate motor til dots on timing gears line up. pull timing set, and replace. put back together.

easy as pie!

so its pretty simple and i cant mess up? lol what about changing the gears

Pretty simple. But if you do replace the chain, get a double roller timing set. It is an improvement over the Morse style chain that is OEM.

+1 on using a good double roller timing chain and gear set. While you are at it, install a timing chain tensioner, too. This will keep your engine timing rock solid for years! You can find the tensioner here, along with its MOPAR Performance part number:

I think the tensioner is kinda overkill myself the stock one should of had one but that double roller I put on my truck is THICK

You can just pull old timing chair and gears off, And then put the new ones on. There's a good write up about somewhere on this site.

As long as you don't move thing when the chain Is off you can mess it up

Yes, do it all. And get a Haynes manual. You'll need it for torque values and other info.

it'll look like this. note the location of the timing dots and keyways.
once you pull the sprockets, do NOT rotate the engine and do NOT remove or twist the distributor.
