Default Need pointers on my front axle

Ok, I have the 98 1500 4x4 with Dana 44. My front axle is rattling like crazy. Done a little research and narrowed it down to my carrier intermediate axle shaft bushing, have any of ya'll replaced this before?? And am I even calling it the correct name, I have no idea where to begin. Any and all advise would be much appreciated.

welcome to df.

that's the big bushing. so if you remove the cad cover and push sideways on the inner shaft, it rattles in the bushing?

see here for part numbers.

you can replace the big bushing with either a bushing or a bearing. they are interchangeable. i replaced the bushing with a bearing with no problems.

remove the passenger side brake stuff and wheel bearing. you can leave the axle nut on if you wish. remove cad cover. slide the outer axle off. slide the inner axle out. i think? you might have to remove the axle seal from inside the cad in order for the big fat inner axle to move out of the way. i did. pull the old bushing. reinstall new bushing or bearing by gently tapping it in. reinstall inner axle. reinstall seal. reinstall outer axle being very gentle to lift it over the seal. reinstall brake stuff and cad cover. test the cad to make sure it all works.

Replace the bushing in the inner end of the outer axle as well. If the intermediate bushing/bearing is shot, chances are the bushing needs replacing as well.

You can get the intermediate shaft out without removing the seal.

I made up this little tool for installing the bearing and the seal, works great much easier than trying to tap the seal in or the bearing. You use it inside the cad area, put the seal/bearing on the socket, get it all in place inside the cad and just turn the one nut and it presses in the part. This turns a pita job into a much easier job.

Parts to make this tool are.

The washers are left over from using a hole saw, I will have to post what size hole saw made these later.

1 7/8th half inch drive socket
2 One .2500 (1/4") bolt 4.5 inches long
3 One washer 1.8125 (1 & 13/16th)
4 One washer 1.7500 (1 & 3/4)
5 Two nut's to fit the bolt

I would replace the seals as they are not expensive and will leak someday. Actually just replace both seals thr driver side is easier than the passenger. I believe if you are already in there might as well replace the stuff that wear the most. The passenger side seal is tougher to tap in, just not room, they have a special tool, but looks like you can make one from a post above.

i wasn't able to get the intermediate shaft out on my 01 w/o removing the seal. i don't know if its different than earlier years or if I wasn't holding my mouth right but it just wouldn't fit through the seal.

Thanks ya'll. I got the two parts ordered. I guess now that I found some people who know what there taking about, is the inner axle seal and intermediate bushing the only two I need to worry about? I don't know much about the internals of a front axle so I wanna be sure I cover all the basics.

There is also a bushing that goes between the inner, and outer axles. I should think the two bushings in the cad would come as a set. But, just because I think that way, does not imply the parts suppliers do......

Two parts numbers so they don't come as a set as one would think.

Mopar part numbers, they might update of course.

BUSHING, Intermediate Shaft 05252686

BUSHING, Axle Shaft 04137740
