What should I expect from my truck performance wise
Just bought it a week ago
1999 1500 Ram
Regular Cab, Short bed
5.2l V8 4x4
72,000miles
K&N FIPK2 intake-I just installed this today.
Magnaflow dual exhaust.
265R16 all terrain tires.
It feels big and heavy(like a freight train), even more so than my best friends 03 z71 extended cab with 5.3l v8.
When I punch the gas it seems sluggish through the low end(makes a deep sucking noise since I installed the air intake) but starts to pick up hard around 50mph. Low end acceleration has seemed sluggish the whole time I've owned it.
This is my first Dodge truck so I'm not sure what to expect from it.Its entirely possible that I may have messed up on the installation of the intake since I have never done one before. Everything seems normal at idle and there are no dash warning lights on.

Well you're certainly on the right track, but you have an eight year old truck with a low power to weight ratio. You didn't mention the condition of the vehicle, but with your mileage andbased on normal maintenance and experience you might check these items out.
TPS probably needs replacement, and you might need the IAC cleaned. That requires removing the Throttle body. Check the plenum in your intake for excessive oil caused by a blown plenum gasket. A loose timing chain, worn valves, plugged convertor can cause small power losses.
Oh and going to a larger tire with highway gears kills low end. No amount of mods other than a supercharger will overcome that.
K&N FIPKS are notorious for sealing issues. You may have to adjust the tube a couple times to get it to seal. Somethimes they rub on the heat shield when the motor flexes under acceleration, and that causes that sucking noise.

Don't forget the tune-up. I have a similar truck and being use to newer Fords and Chevys that get tune-ups at 100k miles, I over looked this too. Your truck takes the "good ole" dist. cap and rotor and plugs and wires. Do a good tune-up first and take dsertdog's advice - plus clean up your O2 sensors.
Hope this helps and good luck with your truck!

its a BIG truck with a SMALL motor. thats about it. 318 imo is more suited for a K car. shoot, i dont even think the 360 is big enough. 390s should have been offered from the factory.
a 440 would be pretty sweet. Especially in the Regular cab, short bed setup. Good choice on that by the way.
