Default Problem with A/C

This is for a Ram 1500 5.9 with 60,000 miles

Just tried the A/C the other day and all I got was warm air. I check the two fuses and they are good, so with the A/C switch on, I check the compressor and the clutch would not engage at all. Now My question is do you think it is a compressor or just needing freon. I remember owning a car that was low on freon and the clutch would kick on and off often and would get cold/warm air here and there, so I'm thinking bad compressor. Everything worked great last year, What do you guys think ?

The system could be too low on refridgerant to engage the compressor. To test this, there is a pressure switch on the system that you use a paperclip or short piece of wire on to jump it off with the engine and A/C on. If the compressor runs, your low on freon.

Is that located on the compressor or somewhere in the system?

On the system on the top of the condenser.Look on the passenger side in the engine compartment on the firewall. It's a black canister-like thing. Should have a green plastic plug with two wires out of it. Unplug the wires and use the wire/paperclip to "short out" the terminals on the wires. With the AC and engine on, the compressor should kick on. This determins that you are low on refridgerant.

Cool, (well not yet, LOL) but thanks for the help. Now when you say short it out, will I blow a fuse or something? Also is there a small shock with doing this?

It will blow a fuse if there is a short in the system or the compressor is seized up, but I wouldn't expect that as you said all the fuses are good.

No worry about a shock. Still DC current running through there.

Edit: If you use a paperclip or some unisulated wire to test, just don't let it touch any other metal on the truck- you know that will blow a fuse!

That reminds me...

My A/C isnt working either, I added freeon, now all it does is the clutch locks up every 3 seconds or so, then lets go and it does this repeatedly weather its on A/C or not, no cold air comes from the vents...

Is my compressor shot? If so, what can I do to stop the cluctch from grabbing every 3 seconds, casue its annoying.

There is an electrical connector that plugs into the compressor. Unplug it and the clutch won't grab no more.
