Default Tire Help

Hi All

long time lurker first time poster.

anyways, to the question.

i currently have a 1996 1500 2WD Ex. Cab 5.9L
i purchased a set of General Grabber UHP in size 245/70-16 as to not throw off my speeedo.
they have a max load rating of 2149 per tire.

i currently have a set of Goodyear Wrangler HT size 245/75-16 with a max load of about 3000

the people at the tire shop said that they would not install the new tires because it was a safety hazard and they did not want the Generals to blow out.

i called The Tire-Rack (where i bought the tires) and said WTF? and they told me that it should be no problem at all..

i was just wondering if any of you had some input on this.

sorry for the long post and thank you in advance.

-Heybuddy

the tire's load capabilities are measured in a 'load range' stamped on the side. Going along with the load range is a max pressure rating. standard passenger tire is load range B (35 psi max), better is C (50 psi), and best is D (65 psi) or E (80 psi). This is sort of equivalent to the old 4 ply, 6 ply, 8 ply rating. If you are doing heavy hauling you want the heaviest tire you can get, pumped up tight to avoid side wall sag, which overheats, etc. As long as you don't exceed the weight, pressure, and speed ratings of the tire you'll be fine. Just get them installed where you bought them and air them up to an appropriate level. (I think mine are D, but I only put about 50 psi to soften the ride and the 'too light' feeling the front end has a high pressures.)

I just got The general Grabbers and installed them my self. I love these tires
I got 265\70 R 16
Wider than stock and almost same sidewall profile. over a 100mile trip my speedo was only off 1.4mi

The people at the tire store want to sell you there tires.

My truck empty weights 6000.
With 1/2 ton load and 6 passangers @ 200lbs it weighs 8200 lbs
div by 4 =2050lbs per tire and still under the load limit of 2149lbs

Yeah I get the same run around from places when I didn't buy the part from them, they just don't want to do it but they can't tell you that because it's against the rules but accept the problem and you are halfway to a solution.

What I do is just start calling around, tell them you have 4 tires you'd like mounted and balanced, and would they do this? I usually stay away from the fancy places, if that helps.

thank you all for your help, well since i called ahead of time and told them that i was bringing them in and they said that was ok i assumed that they would do it...

buyt not only until after 1 hour of waiting for my turn to finally be up did they tell me that they would not install the tires...

this didnt make much sense to me but w/e

and yeah i get the whole thing about trying to sell you their tires cause the first thing the service manager said was do u want to come inside and see what we got for ya? i laughed and told him that if he can give me the same performance that these tires are supposed to give for $83 or less like i paid then id get em, he didnt answer, lol their whole argument was that the stocks were 225/75-16 XL for extra load... guess they dont have half a brain to know that a wider tire can hold alot more load...

but yeah i think ima either take it to my friend who used to work at a tire shop and knows everyone there, or take it to another place that i know some people.. or take it to this one tuner shop that does it for almost half the price cept its about 20 mins away..

so, just to clarify..

these tires will work perfectly fine?
as long as i keep them aired up.
and not trying to haul 4 tons.. lol

thank you all again for your help

the load rating for yours is 2469

but i can see your point, that even still you arent near the 2149 mark.
