Wire Fire 2001 RAM 1500
Here's the story. I did a color change on my 2001 Ram 1500 (5.9). I pulled the engine and everything out from under the hood. Everything was labled and replaced exactly werte it was except one item. I decided to not reinstall the Daytime Running Light Module (DRL) because I don't like them on. When I hooked up the battery I found smoke coming out of the main harnes box under the hood. Further investigation reveiled that a ground wire from the Conector 1 had melted. I multi-metered everything and could not find a fault. No fuses were blown. I was stumped. I plugged the DRL back in and everything is fine (no more smoke). Any ideas guys??????
You may have simply pinched a 12+ wire when you reinstalled something. Under the PDC, or battery tray perhaps. If the wire that burned was a feed from the battery TO a fuse block, it would burn and smoke like a SOB. All that battery power and no fuse.
Removing a DRL module will not cause any type of short.
Good luck with your ride.

No pinched wires, for sure. It was the small black ground wire that is connected to a bundle of groundsand bolts to the inside LH fender. Just below the cruz control module (forward and below the battery). It did not take out any of the other wires in harness. She cleared the wire skin right up to the big white plug in the fuse box. According to the shop manual. There are other grounds at this pont in connector one (pin 14). I think there was some kind of feed back and the power took the shortest route to ground. Where the feed back came from is my worry.
Lucas (prince of darkness) Law: All electrical things work on smoke. Once the smoke is released from an electrical componet it does not work anymore......LOL

Are DRL's standard on 2nd gen. rams? Because mine doesn't have them... (2001)
