Default Troubles installing ABS rear dif speed sensor.

Hello all,

I was in the process of installing an ABS speed sensor to hopefully resolve my 'ABS/brake' dash trouble light issue. But, I've run into a little problem.

Here's the ABS sensor that was sold to me at CarQuest.

Now here are a couple of pics of my rear diff.

Now I consider myself somewhat mechanically inclined, but an having a little difficulty here.

Oh yeah, she's a 2001 5.9 360 2X 2500.

i don't understand what your question is... but...
there are 2 speed sensors on your truck. one is on the transmission, and one is in the top of the rear differential. i think the picture you have is the transmission sensor. i'm looking for a picture of the one on the rear diff, but haven't found it yet. the one on the rear diff is right on top of the pumpkin, with a electrical connector on it.

This is a picture of the connection on top of the pumpkin on hte rear diff.

So, your sayin that Car Quest might have sold methe wrong sensor? I specifically told him the one that goes on the rear diff.

yes, they sold you the wrong part. (...although sometimes it is the trans sensor that's faulty...)

i went to rockauto.com and put in year/make/model and searched on sensor.
i found speed sensor (transmission) with pic like yours, and abs sensor (differential) with no pic.
so i went to web page for 'standard motor products' and chose 'catalog lookup' - 'application'
put in yr/make/model.
under product - scroll down to SENSOR-SPEED
see AT TRANS (SC104) and VSS-DIF (ALS203) click the BG for a pic

Not really. It was only $19.+ plus tax. I think I'm just gonna replace both of them, so I don't have to think about them.

Thanks alot for the info guys.

Yep, that's definitely your transmission speed sensor. I have the same problem you have currently and just purchased the rear diff wheel speed sensor, which I could only purchase through the dealership. I would return the transmission speed sensor because normally the only fault in those is that the internal magnet is covered on the outside by lots of metal shaving blocking the connection. I just cleaned mine off.

I recieved my sensor from rockauto.com and it has a plastic cap on it that I am assuming needs to be removed because it doesn't fit in the rear diff and the sensor I took out had an exposed wire coil. How does this thing come off?

FYI, the "cap" isn't a cap and the old sensor broke off in the rear diff.
