Default Ball Joint Emergency

I had my truck checked out at Tire Kingdom, and it turns out it needs over 1900 in repairs, mainly 1200 in ball joints and tie rods.

I need to know of any DIY writeups that I could do in my front yard that may help correct or at least stall this problem until I can find a cheaper place or save the funds to complete the job.

Thanks for any and all info.

The truck is

1996 Dodge Ram Extended Cab, 5.9L 360
16" Rims with 265/70/r16 tires

I figure it looks worse than it actually is, but alas it is something I have yet to do.

2WD or 4WD? That makes a big difference.

2WD. forgot to mention that. I know I can find the joints, I was just hoping there would be a writeup with some pictures on here.

Spend the money and get a Haynes as it will pay for itself. Be aware that the ball-joint press from the FLAPS can be tricky to use. When I did mine I had to have my neighbor make a custom cup and the ones with the kit were either too large or too small. I spent most of a Saturday and Sunday on the job, but that was better than paying $1,200 for someone else to do it.

This is for a 4x4 but a 2wd is essentially the same - dodgetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=178091

Ok, this is stupid. Why doesn't dodge talk show in that URL? Some kind of DF/DT animosity or something?

I service grade ball joints off of rockauto, hopefully they'll last a year or two until I redo the front suspension when i get shocks, coils, etc. I also got the jack and stands so hopefully with that writeup you sent, and my haynes manual I will be done by friday.
