in regards to accessing the fuel pump......
I would just like to add that it is possible to access the fuel pump without dropping the tank and without completely removing the bed
I recently had some time on my hands and decided to try to remedy my failing fuel-sending unit. With a full tank of gas and no friends or neighbors around my options were few.
I have not dropped a gas tank before so I could not tell you if this is a timesaver. In addition, I would like to add that I have a custom bumper and the angle of lift may not be possible with a stock bumper
. Aside from the ground strap and the filler neck, basically all you have to do is remove 4 of the forward bed mounting bolts and loosen (3/4 of the way) the 2 rear bolts , creating a pivot point near the rear bumper. Take care to make alignment marks on the bolts (this helps in realigning your bed, should it shift).
All I did was take a floor jack and a 2x4 cut to length, positioned it between the drive shaft and exhaust pipe. The 2x4 should contact the bed cross-support and rest firmly. I then jacked up the bed in a dump truck like fashion, making sure listen for any rubbing.
That is it. There was more than enough room to gain access to the fuel pump

Good point. That would keep you from having to unplug the wires to the lights etc. Also I might mention the spare tire tube that goes to the back of the bed should be removed. I bent mine.
That looks dangerous as hell and I'm surprised no one even called you on it. Using a 2x4 as a prop from a jack creates an unstable pivot point. I've attempted this in the past and quickly saw how unstable it is (though not in this exact situation, but the same concept). You should have somehow secured the bed in the upright position and are very lucky that thing didn't flop out with the bed coming down and crushing you.
asuming all the second gens are pretty much built the same , the 2x4 should wedge snugly between the driveshaft and exhaust makingvery little chance for the jack to slip out, orthe 2x4 to slip off.a simple fix would be to notch the 2x4 with a v cut to prevent any slipping
that said..... , it is always a good idea to use a secondary support.
also i would like to mentoin that this was a solo project, if i had help , i would have simply removed the bed

INTERESTING CONCEPT; I HAVE A 6 INCH LIFT WITH AN ADDITIONAL 3 IN BODY LIFT. I CAN SEE THE TOP OF MY TANK AND THERE'S SOME ROOM BETWEEN IT AND THE BED WOULD I NEED TO GO MUCH HIGHER OR WOULD THIS BE ENOUGH TO ACCESS THE FUEL PUMP AND REMOVE IT WITH THE BED IN PLACE?
