Default Severe gear whine...

I have a 98 Dodge 1500 318ci A4 trans 4x4 ext cab. I live up in connecticut so we just gota nice little ice/slush storm and I figured that I was going to use my 4x4 for the ride home from work. The 4x4 engages perfectly fine but whenever I am not on the gas the gears/trans/transfer case whine really bad. It is actually more of a whirring sound but it is extremely loud. I have gears 4.10s in my 94 trans am and they are NO WHERE near this loud. It sounds like something is really wrong but nothing smokes or anything and I just changed the gear oil front/rear dif only about 4k miles ago getting ready for the winter time. I also changed the Transmission fluid and oil. The truck will make the same whirring sound in 2wd when your not on the gas also but usually the sound level is somewhat tollerable. As soon as i touch the gas the sound goes away and it sounds like a normal truck just the rumble of the engine but if i am going down a grade or slowing down for a stop light it starts as soon as I am off the gas.

Didnt know if anyone could provide some insight here. Thanks alot guys.

I also have this problem on my two wheel drive. What causes it? Do I just need to flush my diff? or are the gears bad? The fluid in there is full, but dark and the guys at the oil change shop said there was pressure building in there because the plug came flying out when they unscrewed it. It is annoying.

Do you have a factory LSD unit in the back? That might be your metal bits. But post up a pic of the fragment so we can tell you what it is. if it's a C clip, that's bad news.

That's a distinct possibility, does it get louder when you turn?

from what I've read in my case its a bad pinion bearing....and some of the bits look like part of the crush sleave..... this sucks going to have to get an estimate as I dont want to screw anything up.

well took it in the shop today.....three phone calls later I'm told the rear lsd came apart as well as bad pinion bearing....
To make matters worse I was told the LSD switched over to a new style mid year in 96 and I have the earlier one that is over $300 in parts to repair....when this is all said and done its going to cost me over $800 to get my rear end fixed.....damn money pit! If it wasnt for the 4.56 gears I could have swapped a junkyard one for less...

A new lsd is like 450 and change. How are you up to 800? I'm looking at 750 just to get mine installed. I'm bring in all the parts.

Auggie, all Chrysler LSDs have been crappy from the factory. Even the 09's will suffer from this, even if they don't know it yet.
