Default V10 question

What kind of issues do these have? My buddy is looking at a '96 2500 V10 4x4.

Crappy transmissions and they are very prone to steering wear, they get pretty sloppy

meh, the trannys are fine if you dont abuse them, we have a v10 and its a great truck, its the same drivetrain as the diesels, so they are fairly beefy.

and yes all dodges have front end issues, the trac bars like to wear out and make the truck feel really unstable at any speeds, lol other the that they are great trucks, and super reliable engines.

They're awesome engines, imo. I love the power and the sound of them, though the modified exhaust sound is disappointing.

V-10s are prone to cracked heads due to a design flaw, eating catalytic converters, and just plain spitting and sputtering until they warm up for no apparent reason. They require regular, meticulous maintenance if you either don't want problems or just feel lucky.

Tell your buddy to look for low coolant in either the barf tank or the radiator itself. It doesn't always mean cracked head, but it's the first thing I'd ever look at with a V-10. In my searching for one I found most people didn't bother to fill that up, especially used car dealers.

I searched for one for over 4 months (about 20 trucks physically inspected) and never found a 10 cylinder that had been taken care of properly. Most of them are dogged out and worthless by the time they're up for sale. There's always a diamond in the rough somewhere, but good luck finding it for sale in good condition with that engine.

After saying all that, I'd love to have one that had been properly maintained or I happen to run into a ****load of money to fix a bad one.

The heads don't crack- some have a porosity problem which is due to bad castings. The factory rating is 310HP 450FT LBS torque (Federal)Cali is a bit lower300 I think. The torque curve is sweet, over 400 from off idle to redline. This is at the crank, RWHP and torqueis lower of course.
