8th cylinder misfire CEL flashing
So, I just put a new round filter on my 5.2 ram, I was driving on the freeway in the rain and my ram downshifted when passing a truck and my CEL started flashing. I drove it home and everytime I downshifted it would flash. BTW I have an automatic. Regardless. Now the CEL is on all the time and when i give it just a little gas the engine bucks a little bit (between 1000-1300 RPMS) after that it is fine, but if it gets to high in the RPMs the CEL flashes. The code reads an 8th Cylinder misfire. Any suggestions?
Yes, get your catalytic converter pressure tested at a local muffler shop. A clogged converter will create backpressure that causes misfires on Cyl #6 and Cyl #8.
Yeah, the increased air intake may have made the exhaust blow the old material in the cat loose...but you should be able to tell a big difference in power if the cat is clogged. Just a guess...
Thanks for all the input guys! I have had a noticable decrease in power... I drove about 120 miles in one day after installing the intake plus a few mile long drives around town. Does anyone know if the cat is welded in there or if it is bolt on and also if it is clogged will it need to be replaced or can it be unclogged?
The cat is welded and cannot be unclogged. Sorry, but you're going to have to put a crowbar in your wallet.

If you know someone with a welder, you could just cut it off and gut it, then have them weld it back on...but an exhaust shop probably won't do it...unless they're really shady and don't give you a receipt.
If you have emissions testing it wouldn't be a good idea either... Just a thought...no advocation![&:]

My advice it to be legal and do it right. Gutting cats and O2 sims, IMHO, just make future troubleshooting a PITA.
I gotta agree stay legal if ya know someone with a welder its a piece of cake to just cut out the old cat and weld a new one in there. Otherwise prepare to be raped for labor charges... I learned how to weld for this exact reason.
