Was curios and I am not a race driver and even though I have a 2wd, I think torque is better than HP.

I had set it to retardd but the cover isn't even on yet. I saw others saying advance was better.
So I decided seeing today was an election day and feeling that majority rules. I wanted to know what is more prefered.

I advanced mine.

 

95 percent of the time advancing the valve timing will kill your low and top end power. on a stock cam, that percentage goes up to 100%. retard the valve timing no more than 4 degrees and you'll see a bit of a difference for the better.

time to dive back in and set that chain again!

 

keep in mind valve timing is different from ignition timing. advancing your ignition timing gets the thumbs up, but advancing cam timing gets the BIG thumbs down.

 

I just rember hearing that advancing it would raise the low end retarding it would increase the high end. So what you are saying is that I should retard it?

It wouldn't be a problem I am waiting to put the cover back on after I did the oil pan. It wouldn't be hard to change it.

 

advancing a stock cam will kill the power everywhere.the advance is already ground into the cam itself.retarding it will increase "high-ish end" but you will not suffer down low at all. if you don't mind doing it more than once, advance it then run the vehicle. then retard it and you'll see what i mean...

by the way dont go more than 4 degrees retarded or you WILL start to affect your low end and your top end wont be as happy either.

 

I can only go stock or 4 back or forward with this chain. I mean I know I could go more but it is designed for three settings with three seperate key-way slots.

The only thing I would have to take off would be the cam bolt and the two spokets it would take me 15 minutes to change it at the point I am at now. Just the pavment sucks diy did it that way and everyone who retarded it seemed to have to reset their fuel sync.

 

Retard it and you will gain some low end power. Or just keep it stock.

nope. you wont gain and low end at all. but you wont lose any either. the power is all going to be in the form of midrange torque and upper end hp.
