1995 5.2L engine swap to 1999 5.9L
Hi,
I have a 1995 Ram 1500 with a blown 5.2L engine. I have located a 1999 5.9L engine with supposedly a "top end" rebuild - new cylinder heads, new felpro gaskets, new intake mainfold. I has 80K-90k miles on it and the asking price is $650 negotiable. The truck was totaled soI cannot see/hear the engine run. Is the deal worth considering and if so what mods would I have to make to the 5.2L setup to accommodate the new 5.9L engine?

Make sure the 'new' engine is complete with a balancer and fly wheel.
You will have to swap the intake and exhaust manifolds off your 95 to the 'new' engine.
other than that it should work.
Ask if they have receipts to back up the repairs to the 'new' engine too.

Like Rabbler says, you have to have the crankshaftdamper and the flexplate for a 5.9. The 5.2 is an internally balanced engine and the 5.9 is externally balanced. Not installing these parts from a 5.9 will destroy the new engine and possibly the tranny.
Youcan use all of your bolt-ons, exhaust manifolds, intake manifold, motor mounts, fuel injection, throttle body, etc. The torque converter is a direct swap yours to the new engine. For an extra $50 make sure you put in a new Melling High Volume Oil Pump. Just nice insurance to have on an older engine and easily accomplished while the engine is out. A new water pump, all gaskets except head gaskets, and all hoses are a good idea also. Try to get everything you can with his engine from the throttle body down to the oil pan, crankshaft damper, water pumpto flexplate.
Regarding the PCM, your 5.2 PCM will run the 5.9, but it will run better if you can locate a PCM from an identical truck to yours that had a 5.9. The one from the 99 will not work. Check on www.car-parts.com. I've had a lot of luck there locating parts. Unless you are going to build up the 5.9 with some performance parts, a customer flash or even a performance Mopar PCM (unless you can get one cheap) would actually in my opinion be a waste of money at this time.

'95 ram 1500 originally was a 318/5.2 swapped in a 360/5.9 stroked to 408 everything on truck is original 5.2l wires and all
blew it up and wants to install another 318 my mechanic said it's not possible

5.2 and 5.9 used the same wiring harness. Being a 95 though, how did you adjust for more cubes??? If you put a 5.2 back in there, and the PCM still thinks its a 408, it is gonna run pig-rich, if it runs at all. 5.9 will also bolt right in, hook right up, (using your intake and sensors and such) but, it will still be running really rich.

Well, now you know why the engine blew up. Running incredibly lean.......
You should be able to drop another 5.2 in there then, and it will run just fine.
