Transmission***UPDATE
Well I mistook what it was called though. It's not the True-Trac which would be the Detroit. It's a "True-Lock". He says it's similar to the Auburn in which it has gears. I told him I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't going to be a ****ty dodge replacement. He said it's a unit they use in all of their trucks when they replace them, and said it has the Aburn design. He says the Auburn is about $60 more. I kind of hedged towards getting the Auburn, but he seemed confident with just getting what he always gets, so I'm just going to let him put in what he wants. That way if there is a problem as well, he can take the blame, considering he's the one saying it's a good unit that works for them, and I'm paying $950 or whatever. Just want my damn truck back though. Something like this just went and kind of sapped the fun out of the whole thing though. That tranny looked so pretty, but just got tainted with this..
But hometheater, considering you and me have the same trucks, and you just got done doing what I am doing now, how is your truck now man? Does it ride a whole lot better?? Also, with this whole posi thing, I'm a little confused. Silver_Dodge was explaining to me earlier that all dodges (besides our offroad editions) have open differentials, which means only one wheel will spin unless it's losing traction, then the other wheel will spin too. Where has posi traction makes it so our trucks ALWAYS have two wheels spinning, is this correct? Would this mean our trucks do better in 2wd than most trucks? Will I notice a differance with this new unit at all? Anyways, just want to get a feeling of what life is like in your truck with the new tranny and new posi assembly. Thank You.

For the most part my truck runs good. I seem to keep having one issue after another though and it's things I wouldn't have even expected. I thought I had most of the stuff new on the truck yet somehow something I haven't replaced always seems to find a way to break. Like just the other day my rear brakes were messing up and it turned out the little arm that hits the star wheel to adjust them had been bent so it wasn't hitting the star wheel. I just got done fixxing that. Not a big deal as it was only $15 or so for the kit to do that, the ajusters, the adjuster cable, and new dust covers for the rear at Napa. Not bad. I was just going to do that side but the adjuster didn't want to turn as easily as I'd like it to on the other side even after putting PB blaster on it so I did both sides for $30 or so plus a $23 tool I didn't have. Not a huge bill but it's one of those little things that will nickle and dime you. Especially when I want more appearance or performance things done instead of fixxing stuff. Hopefully you don't have these things and I've gotten the common things fixxed so I'm down to stuff thats just happening to wear out or break. I also had my dash crack around a bolt hole I noticed. Hopefully it wont crack anymore but I have my doubts. I've already had this dash replaced once a year and a half ago. I don't want to spend $400 to do it again.
As for the posi traction unit aka LSD when one wheel starts slipping it will lock them together so both will spin. So if you go in mud and get stuck with an open differental only one wheel will spin and sometimes the other could get traction but it doesn't send power to both only the one side which is spinning. In theory a LSD would lock up and send power to the other wheel to help get you out. It also if doing a burnout can do the same thing. Instead of it just being one wheel that spins it will lock up when that one starts spinning and both will spin. It is better than a locker as a locker is locked up pretty much anytime you are on the gas so it will usually squeel the tires when turning or sometimes bind up and make a loud bang. Lockers just don't seem to be very streetable. People that want some of the perfomance of a locker but drive it mostly on the street like me get the LSD. When you look at the idea of a LSD it seems nice but there are a lot of situations they don't work like they are supposed to. Like if you have one wheel off the ground it wont send power to the other one too. It will usually slip and not do you any good. This is bad for hard core offroaders. This is where a locker would still lock up and be sending power to the other wheel. LSD's seem to have a repuation for slipping when it gets in tough situations where as a locker doesn't.
I didn't notice much of a difference in driving after having the Auburn put in. It still does fine as it did before. The only thing before is if you did a burn out mine would lock both wheels up then slip. I guess this from it being worn out. I don't know if the Auburn does this but I'd hope not. For normal non spinning driving I doubt you will notice a difference.
I would have paid that extra $60 for the Auburn but oh well. When you are spending that much wouldn't it be worth an extra $60 to know you are getting a quailty unit? I've read up a lot about these and never even heard of a True Lock. Who makes it? I wouldn't want to be the one to see if it's any good I'd go with what others have tested and found to be good which are the Detroit and Auburn.
BTW the Auburn doesn't have like the Detroit does. It has clutches that can wear out though where as the Detroit doesn't. The Auburn then again seems to be a little more road friendly. I'd call him back and tell him to cancel the order on the True Lock if it was me and then do some research on what I wanted as they each have their +'s and -'s.
Will he not warranty the Auburn or what? If it's $60 more that sounds way too high. I'd order it from Rye Valley and Gear for like $387 like I did or whatever I paid then have another shop install it for $400 like I did. Then maybe pay $100 for bearings. Thats a heck of a lot cheaper than what they will sell it to you for.
If I was spending $1000 on a unit I'd want to do some research on it other than just take the guy at the shops word. Thats a lot of money to just throw away on something you have never heard of.

neon- yes our trucks with the LSD do way better than other trucks in 2wd. i have yet to get stuck in this truck, even in 2wd.
recon we wont be seein anymore burnouts will we?

You weren't even sure what the part is but you're willing to spend another $1000 on it? I'd just leave it out if you can't afford it. An open differential will be fine since you don't offroad. Hell I offroad alot and I have open differentials and I don't get stuck that much.

Well trying to have someone take the posi out and put in a free carrier into it, would have also been a money job too in my view. I mean, the truck came with it, I just felt wrong devaluing a piece that the truck came with, doesn't make sense. Besides, I do offroad here and there. Nothing like official, but I frequently like to dick around occasionally, so it made sense. I mean these guys know what they are doing, they just put in a really nice tranny. He told me this is what they always use for the big trucks that come in here and he said they've never had an issue with it. I'm just going to take his word, leave this place on good terms, and hopefully not see them for a very very long time.
Now regarding a transmission, since it is brand new...what's the protocal for tranny servicing. How often should I have it flushed with a new filter?

Hopefully we won't be seeing a thread in 20k miles about how your LSD went out on you again. I wouldn't have taken that chance when dealing with that much money but Its your choice so if you want to go for it. There are just proven options out there most of which you could have gotten another shop to probably do cheaper.
you can get a Detroit True Trac that will never wear out for around $500
