It does sound a bit pricy.
Labour should only be about 2 1/2 hours to replace the carrier.
Did you ask about rebuilding your current LSD? It's not hard to do and much cheaper.

Nope, you guys are right. I've decided what I want to do. I'm calling Mark at the front desk tomorrow, and telling him to cancell my order. I'm just going to tell him I don't have the money like I thought I would so I can leave it at good terms. I'm going to ask him to wrap the truck up and have it ready for me tomorrow. And then I'm just going to get it out of there. I made an appointment with our local offroad company, and I'm having them take a look for themselves at the posi. I'm pretty sure it's cooked considering there were chipped pieces of metal coming from the diff, but I still want their opinion. If it needs a new one or needs to be rebuilt, I will have them order a Detroit True-Trac or an Auburn, whichever is cheaper. How much should this cost guys in total including parts? The transmission shop was wanting a little over a $1,000. But you guys are right, I didn't like the fact I wasn't even getting a brand name of Detroit or Auburn when I was paying that much. I'm also a little dissapointed he was trying to tax me like that. I just finished giving the guy $4,000 for a brand new tranny job, it's a little sad he was trying to pick pocket me like that, but I'm not going to let that happen. I want it to get done right and have a name that you guys are suggessting. So again, what price range is acceptable for a job like that entailing the Detroit or Auburn, just so I can see whos pulling my leg etc. Thanks again guys, I can always count on you all.

I'm not even going to adress the fact that you can get an open carrier for like $30 and put it in yourself relativley easy.

That being said I believe the tru-trac is around the $450-$500 range.

Well I mean, what would you guys do in my shoes? It's an offroad editon truck, if you had to replace your posi unit, wouldn't you want it back to the way it was supposed to be? I just feel wrong taking a nice feature off the truck that it came with. I don't offroad visciously or anything, but when I do, I like to be the star out there lol. I guess I just want to hear what you guys would do if you were in my situation. I don't really have much time because I can't risk my pinion and gears being destroyed, so I have to either replace this unit, or make it an open differential. What would you do in my shoes, honestly?

Here's the update, same as it always is. He drove his truck like he was in a Ferrari, something broke, he had it fixed by a shop, they tried to rip him off, he paid major $$$, vows to never do it again.

He'll be doing it again in about a month.

lol sorry, you know how it goes with my threads

Basically the tranny is done, but they are saying I need a new posi unit. They said its shredding metal and could destroy the diff if I dont address it. I was goingt o have them do it. They wanted a $1,000 for a unit called a True_Lock. I was getting nervous because guys were saying that at least if I was gonna drop that cash I should get an Auburn or a Detroit. So, I'm calling him tomorrow and cancelling the order. I already paid him for the tranny. They'll wrap the truck up tomorrow and I'll have it back. I'm having a new place check the posi and see what they think. And if I have to replace it, I want to do it right with an Auburn or Detroit. Some guys think I should just get rid of the posi though and make it an open diff. but it makes me a little nervous, feels weird getting rid of a nice feature like that. But I jsut want to see what people would do in my shoes on this one!

Save your money this time. You've already dumped a LOT into it. Don't be tempted to dump even more on something you really don't need. You can always get it later. Save your money. What if something else breaks next week, or in a month, then what will you do if you just put down almost $5000 on this stuff. Save your money so you can at least keep your truck on the road. Off-roading it will only brake more stuff anyway.
